what is the deal with the seals. im rebuilding my motor and the the shaft goes thew the bearing and then the seal s there. then th copper washer and the impeller. but the book is showing some other seal. im confused

There is an inner seal and an outer seal, they do different things. The inner seal keeps oil in the crankcase, and water out. The outer seal keeps water from leaking out onto the floor. If the outer seal leaks, water will come out of the weep hole at the bottom of the pump cover. It's also important to put them in correctly. If the outer one is backwards, water will leak out. It's common for people to put the outer one in backwards because it needs to be installed in the reverse direction of the inner one.

yeah i got it figured out. thanks. the seals have a flat side and a side with the lips and whatnot. i have the flat side facing out in both cases. inside seal is oil. and outside is water.

Not exactely a perfect description, because he got it wrong. :lol: The outer seal needs to show the "lips" as he put it, to the outside. Look at this diagram, number 13 is the outer seal, number 12 is the inner seal. They are installed differently. The inner one shows the flat surface, the outer one shows the "lips". Basically, there is a void between the two seals, The water stays inside the pump and cover, the oil stays inside the crankcase. Got it now? :D Image

well fuck it looks like it got them both backwards. haha. i put the outside one with the flat part facing out. flipped it over installed the inner seal flat side out(whick would be in) and reinstalled the bearing.

hell with it. i tried to removed them to flip them a buggered them a bit. they should work but i had to order some other stuff anyway. and ordered a new shaft while i was at it. kinnda sucks nice new powdercoated motor in pieces because of a few stupid seals. oh yeah and two washers that i dont think were in the trans from the start. i went threw it about 50 times making sure. haha

it wa #18 and 21 on the main shaft. no washers. hummm. where can I get a deailed book. the manual is bullshit compared to the maintince manuals im used to for helicopters. haha

also is how do I get the little bearing out for the waterpump shaft.

the one is the waterpump housing, or the one in the engine case? the waterpump housing one is easy, just heat it up a little and tap it out from the other side. the engine case one, there are a few ways, last time I heated it up and stuck a screw driver in the and teetered it out.

danny you da pimp. came right out with a bit of heat and a 6mm tee handle allen wrench. little jiggling back and forth. :wink:
