We're on the same page Bob. I have no intention of moving or fabricating a new Y, etc, when I get a Gen 3 (I have a guy interested in a trade, we'll see) and plan on doing as little fab work as possible.AlisoBob wrote:I saw that and think its pretty cool...... but the inner voice keeps telling me ...."These are just dirtbikes..."
My Gen 3 conversion dosent require any cutting of the cradle, and only modest reworking of the "Y"..... With a 125 as a starting point, you do what you gotta do!
Not as fancy or high tech, but in the reach of more folks I think.
Yea... lots of indusrty and machinery in Cali makes anything possible!
Still, I like to see guys that can do work like that. I don't need it myself but appreciate the talent.

I want something cost effective, S/H can keep the $16.5 k market all sewn up for themselves
a brand new SH CR500AF is $9,500.
a complete *conversion kit*, when supplying me yoiur franme, pipe silenccer all parts needed and already modfied ,
is $1,800 (includes shipping costs back to you)
dog my work all ya'll want, but at least keep the actual facts /pricing straight?
as far as the examples shown of variuos Y's
some beautiful work!

My facts are straight.Service Honda Website wrote:Shown in these pictures is a very black AF with a powder coated black frame, swing arm, and sub frame. ...... The above bike can be duplicated for about $16,500.

A new stock SH bikes pricing isnt 16K
and at 1800 , a build assemble it yourself "conversion kit"
is reasonably priced.
now IF, you want to take ONE extreeme example of a customer of mine that wanted all kinds of bling, expensive coatings, as well as 3K in Ti parts,, as representative of SH 16K market..
then you're right, that one guy did exist.
hardly a market ..?? call it what you want.
my OPNINION bob, ,since its a forum for ALL opinions right?
is that your were intentionally picking the very highest priced AF youve seen , to make some point. While ignoring that SH offers other more afforedable options.
there are many options out there,
i think its great you present them.
how you do so, is your choice obviously.

9k is still hardly affordable when the cost of a roller a donor and all tools necessary including the welders time and fab costs is less than 9k and you can fleabay the extra parts to offset some of the initial costs. and in my opinion come out with a better product in the end.. Just my 2 cents
97 Steel 500 that wants to be an AFC
ISBB-
i do understandwhere you are coming from.
9.5k is far different than 16K,
which was my whole point?
9.5K vs 6 or 7K for a CRF450R? is certainly more expensive.
( but get back to me on resale value of the 450,,and i'd say we are pretty even? )
but idont think we should debate that any bike built in quantities of hundreds, rather than thousands, cost a bit more ?
nor should we debate a that brand new bike ,
costs more than a used one..?
and as far as on the used front-
16K or 9K is also a lot different than $1,800
so as far as using your own chassis and your own refurbished, CR500 engine.. i stated the conversion costs.
and yes of course a bike can be done reasonably that way,
regardless of who you choose to do it,
or how much you do yourself.
This thread was about the "Y"
it has some very nice examples of some here..
sorry for sidetracking it.

I like the resale point. I got a whopping $2,600.00 for my prestine '03 CRF450 and bought my even more prestine '04 CR250 for the same.
I have every confidence that I can at least get my money back for my SH converted '04 CR500AF. Had I not gone with a new engine, carb, etc, I would have made money on it and might still if I ever choose to sell it.

This is reasonable, and fills the need for someone without skillz, lliving in a remote area, no access to a decent welder, and lacking confidance to get out the sawzall.AJ wrote: .....at 1800 , a build assemble it yourself "conversion kit"

or
$1800 can build a whole bike, like Crackers example.
Thats the greatest thing about the CR500.... find your comfort level, and go for it...
From buying a Turnkey bike ( S/H or TTM) of finding a basket case motor and building a bike around it.
The choice is yours!
