Porting is a means not an end. If you know what you want and are working with someone who knows the specific engine and porting in general, you can get great results. If not, then save your money. I am going to send Glen at GSS my vintage cylinder because when we spoke he quickly understood that I didn't want to change the power characteristics, but rather just make what I had more efficient and gain a little everywhere. In contrast the other shop I spoke with offered an extra 5 hp (which is lots for an old bike) but the price was 104 race gas and an experts-only power band.

For my next rebuild I'll have it ported. Now I'm convinced to leave it stock, though.

As an aside, I think I'm spoiled in Detroit with the price of race gas, it's only $2/gallon more than premium for 110 turbo blue. :D

I have sevral cr500s and I have a trail port GSS I like it.
I have a few hill climbers that are ported I like them also.

some also cut by GSS.

if you like the feel of a stock cr500 then keep it that way its an awsome machine, I just have a problem keeping my hands off em.
I get a stock bike and build it up to where you cant ride it around but in the sand. I love the cr500

Well I thought I could get away with a stock piston, but I pulled the jug off today and the bore doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling. The skirt was hitting on both the intake and exhaust side, the crosshatch is gone. It also looks like there's some rust spots on the bore that haven't worn away, this bike sat for several years not being used so I can't say I'm surprised.

Looking at these pics, should I bore it out one size, or hone it real quick and just run it? If it was a car engine I'd bore it without question, but I'm not sure about a 2 stroke dirtbike engine.

Tighter than I'd like (just bought a house), but I don't want to half-ass it so I can ride for 6 months before having to tear it down again.

I should probably just bite the bullet and go one size over, huh?

Wiesco's need more clearance, and tolerate excessive clearance better than cast.

Perhaps a forged piston could work, with honing only.

That's a decent idea. Maybe I'll see how it cleans up with a light hone, and try a forged in it. With a Wiseco I'd have to relieve the exhaust bridge, right?

you have to do that no matter what piston. The wiseco recommends the holes though

You would be correct, sir. I was hoping to just throw a new stock size oem piston in there, but I'm not happy with how the bore looked.

I think I'm giving forged a try. Danny and his avatar can't steer me wrong. :D
