ok, made a lot more progress yesterday.
got the right length for the Y, got the Y trimmed up so there aren't any shard edges, but an OEM style weld line (not a strait line).
got the Y on and cut the cradle peices a little short so I couldput the solid peices inside and weld to the solid peices and the tubing. Should be strong as F#$%!
I drilled some holes to hold the solid peices up. The solid stuff had to be trimmed because it didn't fit in the tubing.
after the welding I hit it with the flap disc. The idea was to make it look like one solid peice... from a distance it definitly looks good, but up close I still need to clean it up more.

Thanks guys! Ya, Shanman, that old lincoln was my high school pimp mobile!
so, I made some more progress...
chopped off the exhaust mount that was on the wrong side, shaved down the mounts a little to give a 0 offset and make them as close to the frame as possible to keep the motor as far forward as possible. the clutch cover is like 1mm away from touching at the front waterpump bolt. I can't possibly turn it further forward without changing the cradle. Played with the stock headstay which looks like it will work great with some modification. Made my lower mounts, still need to clean then up some.
I killed my welder, I wasn't paying attention and touched the feed tube on the weld and poped my gas line. Luckily I paid for the extended warranty and there was already a problem with the gun

Hopefully I can have it back up in a few days. I'm kinda stuck waiting right now, but atleast I have my final motor position.

I'm taking my time and thinking a lot about this one because I want to have everything exactly how I want so the second one will be even easier.

Hey danny why not give that cluct cover cutout a nice little radius to make it cleaner instead of a notch.. This way you can fab a plate with a little extra beef and the weld covers more area instead of a hard to weld notch.

Ya, I keep burning myself, first there was the pipe burn, then the BBQ burn, now the welding burn... I'm not having a good year when it comes to hurting myself

Nick, I though about that, or even a smaller, like 1/2" AL tubing cut in half, but it seems that the easiest will be for me to stick the solid peice in there. if I do it right, I won't even have to trim it, and if I do I plan on doing a smoothe radius instead of just cutting into it so that I don't have to worry about creating a weak spot.

well, either way, if I put in a solid peice or a radius, I'm gonna have to do the same welding, probably more with the radius...
Maybe today I will see if one of the places in town has any aluminum tubing, just so I can really check out my options.

got some work done yesterday...busted out the welder...

I put the one solid peice in there and welded it in place. I will have to grind a very small radius in it since the motor touches, but it barely touches, so very little material will have to be removed.

Ya, with the welder I've been learning as I go. I did some other welding on the frame that came out a little ugly, so I'm gonna clean it up, but I have been getting some good penetration in general, so I think the strength won't be a problem, just looks.

Your lookin' pretty good there Danny

. To dial in your welder get some scrap pieces that are the same guage as your frame and practice with adjustments on those. Once your happy with the results welding on the bike should be easier.
