Gen 1 Gearing REALLY short...

Ok, so now I'm all street legal, got the "Q" muffler (still too friggin loud) and went for a cruise...uh...shouldn't a 500 go faster than a zit faced squid on a moped?

Seriously, every gear was trying to flip me over backwards, but pinned in 5th I was MAYBE going 70??

What gear ratio (final drive) do you use for trail riding?

(I think my motor is a 90 or 91...not really confirmed)

LOL! What gears are on the bike? I would start with a 14 48 set of gears on the chain. Less bottom, and more top end speed, probly around 80mph. If the thing is still all in your face, go with a 15 and a 48, then you will do closer to 100mph.

I would run 15/40 and get a '93+ 4th and 5th gear, the close ratio boxes (88-92) don't have shit for top speed.

Hey I think I discovered why I have handlebar clamp bolt imprints on my forehead everytime I get on the gas.....

How does a 13/51 final drive sound???

Needless to say I found the "dial-a-wheelie" option and will be fixing it immediately! OMG

Still learnin about the "Widowmaker".

Seriously....the guy I bought the bike from broke his tib and fib from a unexpected wheelie...15 minutes after starting the bike the first time.

I thought my 1000 was fast off the line !!!

So what do you guys use for goat trails and all around riding. Not flat out desert stuff. I slow down before I go down nowadays.

I was running a 15 with a 38 - 44 with a 97 tranny. For street use the old 88-92 ratios are better. The gap between 4 n 5th is to much with the newer style tranny when geared for the street. If you set the motor up to turn more RPM and loose torque the problem becomes real apparent.

You need a big carb for top power on street if you want a ripper but fuel mileage will suffer.

im going with 15 43 on my 91 trans. I found that bto motorsports in cali is the only one in the us that carries renthal tht small. I hpoe that gearing combo will still be low enough to spin the tire out of corners but still can hit 80 once n a while without a problem. if you run a 15 in the front you will need to shave about 1/8 off the case saver.

15/45 will get ya scootin along at a really good clip.. Thats what was on my bike when i picked it up... I could pull away from anyone once i got up to speed

OK, so finding a 15 front is like finding a tree without a coconut in it around here. I think I'll go 14-47 for now and see how it works.

14/47 won't do much at all, thats what I run, and I ride in teh dirt with a wide ration and regularly max out 5th in the dunes or on fire roads. sunline make a 38 or 39t, that would make a good street ratio.

skiddy let me look around my geeerage i might have my 15 still it was in pretty good shape when i took it off.. It doesnt do squat for me in the dunes... Ya the back stretch flat open it was great but i was shifting waaaaaaaaaay too damn much with it.. so i went 14/49.. i believe and its much better that way.. If i find it ill letcha know... Also most parts unlimited/tucker rocky dealers can get you the 15.. if you want to buy new.. Just go for the cheap JT steel sprockets and you will find it.

So If ISBB has a 15 then I need a 45 rear?

Keep in mind....this is a street legal trail bike, she's too socially unacceptable right now (read loud) to ride on the street. Just connecting trails on Mauna Kea legaly.

Also, keep in mind 10,000 - 14,000ft altitude is a real power robber.

Like I said....for speed I got the DRZ. For goat trails, woods and mountains I'm setting up the 500.

I need stock fork springs too (97 CR250)

Anyone put on a cooling fan?? Catch tank?? Time for a new post...?

15/45 is doable on the trails (you will need to clutch a lot) and doable on the street, I wouldn't go any taller for the dirt, or lower for the street, Its really hard to find that balance between street and dirt unless you can get a wide ratio trans, that really helps things out.

Those are only out of the Tucker Rocky Catalog and there is still the Parts Unlimited.. Some brands are cheaper in one catalog vs the other but that will give you a good place to work with...
