I would think that maybe your jetting is out and when you dropped your transfers and bumped the head 40 you got closer to a better jetting program.
so your saying all i had to do was jet my bike for the arm ripping power?
all that porting,cutting 040 off,head mod,raising exh. port and oh! taking the hook out of the rear transfers was all for nothing when all i had to do was rejet

Entertaining post but I don't understand why it's important to put down one guys porting style. If he likes it, so be it. What I think is important in a porting job is consistency. When someone has a super fast bike due to porting, it would be nice to be able to get the exact same job done on mine. I have a stock barrel right now and want to have it ported, but it's hard to decide who will be able to make it the fastest in the dunes. I'm not going to do anything like put a longer swingarm on or change pipes or anything, just jave it ported and honed out, but I want the best power I can get on the top end.

honestly i would recomend the same port job i had from jerry hall- will cost about $500 for cylinder and head, runs good with pro cuircit pipe, pretty fast turn around at probly 30 days, revs like a mofo. only drawbacks= it will have alot more compression and may not run well on pump gas but he could tell you for sure, will be hard (but not impossible)to handle without extended swingarm in the sand, the power hits really hard compared to stock and alot of guys dont like that. in the dirt its controlable because the tire just spins. that jeryy hall '00 motor i had with '92 4th/5th gear swap pulled olds hill pretty easy in 5th gear with 14/49 gears- your probly 30-40lbs heavier in weight but im sure it would still pull 5th. my stock '98 5th gear and olds dont get along very well 4th gear works good though

Spend ou money on SUSPENSION and it will make you faster then a port job...
My suspension is righteus dude, and no it won't make the bike more powerfull than a port job, that's silly. My ported bike is way faster than my non ported bike, and it's suspension is a pogo stick.

I hear you man, that dude does some sweet work, and I agree your bike was very fast over at Olds. I have thought about going with Jerry Hall because of your bike, now I think I will. How would you compare that engine to the GSS one?
I cut the base it increases throotle responce down low where the motor has a flat spot and it raises the compression at the same time. he is raising the exhaust back up to try and compensate for top end lose. I like the stock pipe.
These motors reALLY do have a hole in the bottomend you can drive a truck through. lowering the
cylinder a helps alot to solve the provblem or a fatty pipe but you pay bad on top with those but for most people the bike works better to not rev it so who needs the top. It depends on what kind of riding you do.
GSS reworked my jug.
He lathed the base, milled the deck, hit the ports and cut the head. Don't ask me measurements 'cause he didn't tell.
He promised that it would RPM a few Ks more and bottom-end grunt will be amazing (I'm sure it will).
He gave before and after flow bench #s....I have the notes somewhere in my build folder. He didn't specify mercury #s, but I recall stock it flowed 65% and 85% modded (I could be wrong here).
Many years ago I ran a CR250. I cleaned up the ports, swapped in a bigger carb, DG pipe (the hot ticket back then), played w/timing, etc.... it ran respectable. It was all intended for top-end.
I cut the shit out of the head and it ran a lot better, yet a lot richer too. When I leaned it down that thing came to life. My friends mostly had 250 Yammis and Suzzies, all of theirs sounded like 250s. Mine sounded more like a 480 when it got on the pipe and exploded to life.
You can throw all the parts and machine work into something with good results. The big cam in the little engine theory? Proper tuning is what seperates the pros from the squids (I'm not calling anyone here a squid).
You don't see people on this forum complaining/talking about "taming the hit". What the fuck is that...... power-hungry men love the hit. Hit=power...or at least where I come from it does. Keeps a person on his toes, so to speak.
Tame the hit........I always saw people bring that up on the other site. Not so much over here, usually from noobs.
I'll see how GSS' work does when mine is up an running.
I saw a pic of his cylinder tooling. You'd have to have 4 hands and use both feet w/his set-up.

The way I see it is if you want to tame the "hit" on your 500, than you need to get a different bike, if anything I think the 500 needs more of a "hit" and from what I have been reading Danny Graves bike has that "hit", but thats just my cup of tee
i was always under the impression to gain any significant amount of topend power you have to increase the total exhaust window area, which hampers your low speed power......... hence the reason why manufacturers started using powervalves. let us know if you get that
"all over" power increase like you were promised

All I can compare it to is my 480....I've never had the honor of roosting a 500.
I did have a 450R back in the day....that thing had a brutal hit. The first time I rode the 480, I expected that same punch. I don't know if Honda made drastic changes within 2 model runs,....or if it's the afternarket pipe, but there is no hit whatsoever. Just tractor torque w/good pull all the way through.
In one of Glenn conversations, he said my cylinder was really old. Yep, it's an 87. Since the later ones were tamed down, I figured the early designs were the best for producing power.
Ignition mapping, pipe design, ports....all influence the hit. I'll have to wait and see.

I have never felt a hit on my 500 either (yes its fresh top and bottom), like wheelie gene said all I feel is a good torquey bottom and smooth power delivery all the way through, Ive only felt arm jerking power once on a 500 and I was 12 so that might have been why
