5 gallons for 35.00 at sherwin williams may be less depending where you get it. i have mixed it as high as 50% wich i think is 114 octane. but heres the reccomended specs on mixing
Toulene
Mixtures with 92 Octane Premium
10%...94.2 Octane
20%...96.4 Octane
30%...98.6 Octane
btw you will have to jet richer depending on how much you use. i think compared to a jug of red-x race fuel you will save a hell of a lot.

So this is a for sure, safe way to make race fuel? This would be great if it is. My YZ MUST be run on race fuel, the station where I've been buying Sunoco from the pump, pump's broken, and being a paint contractor am in Sherwin-Williams everyday (and get even better pricing).
Just want to make make sure its safe to run?

oh isnt it? a 5 gallon can of race 110 at my local supplier is 57.90
mixing the toluene with 5 gallons of 92 oct. at 50% gets you 10 gallons for 51.30 (i was quoting the highest priced arctic brand race fuel)
the red x brand was 45.99 but its still cheaper.

Haha. Probably on that its not much cheaper, don't ever use it.Ported&Polished wrote:Yea but Billy is a painting contractor and gets a discount from Sherwin Williams. Lets see what he can get it for, then we can all use his account and get the good deal.Pending his approval of course.
I pay $32.50 (was $30 3 weeks ago) for five gallons of Sunoco 110, out of the pump. So, the price will be about the same for me for five gallons of toulene, but once I mix it with pump gas I'll get ten gallons for about $47.50 . Most importantly, since the pumps where I get my race fuel are broken, and they don't know when they will be fixed, this allows me to ride. Oh yeah, and not drive 40 miles round trip to get it.

Thanks for the info!

I wouldn't have tried this unless I had read about it here first. I went to Ace Hardware and just bought a gallon for $13 and mixed it with three gallons of premium. I felt like an idiot creating this brew from essentially a paint thinner, but I was laughing in my helmet all day Sunday. I didn't richen the jetting and honestly I felt it was a hair on the rich side anyways. As it probably should with the temperature rising like it is. I'm going to start calling this Rocket Fuel myself. On the opening lap I had a chill go down my spine I haven't felt in quite awhile. The bikes unexpected lurch forward out of a corner with little throttle input was a riot.
I've never thought a stock 500 would remotely benefit from race fuel. And personally I've never used true race fuel since my 200 days. But the CR500 seems to respond really well to slightly higher octane such as 97. I had temporarily tried over the shelf octane booster early this year that yielded small improvements right off an idle. But the toulene(sp?) works even better off and idle and produces gains to the top. How much exactly I can't tell, but it felt to me like I had added a tooth to the rear.

Yeah I really don't think expensive race fuel is worth it. A 500 runs just fine without it. Can it run better? Apparently it can. But I don't think it's necessary. I think on every gallon of race fuel it should have a huge label that reads, "Results may vary".
This toulene stuff...I'm not going to be taking anymore off Ace Hardware's hands. I thought this thread was interesting and wanted to try it once myself. And what a nice surprise, it does actually do something. But the 500 runs just fine on $3.50 premium, doesn't need $13 per gallon paint thinner to run the way it should.
You can keep that nice ocean front property in Utah MFDB
...and you can also have my share of go fast juice.
