taken out of a 1989 Honda CR500 dirt bike
Both my bikes have diff year motors to the frames.

87 86 or 85.
You can tell it was in a newer frame from the kicker and silicone rear coolant hose with a mark from sitting on the expansion chamber.

its an '87 or '88 unless the side cover was swapped. the '85 and '86 don't have a removable clutch cover.

at closer look, it looks like its a short rod motor by the height of the base deck above the ignition cover. probably an '85 or '86 w/ newer side cover. You could buy a complete '85 or '86 bike for $700...

It also looks like the right side cover has a the coolant port going straight up rather then angled back. Shows it has an 89-93 side cover. 89-newer kicker. 86-87 cylinder and head (black) Frankenstein motor... It's been screwed with more than monica lewinsky.

so it looks like it could be just an 89 bottom end with either an 86 or 87 cylinder and head.
I guess I dont understand how that would work. The way I understand it is; if I were to get a newer cylinder for my bike the cases would need to be machined for it to fit.
How does this work in the reverse. Wouldn't there need to be something to take up that extra space that the newer cases have with the older cylinder...Im confused.
Say hallo to my little friend, Mr. CR 500.

I don't think it is even an '89 bottom end, look at the deck height where the base gasket is. its just a hair higher than the ign housing part, just like my short rod '86. I think it is an '85 or '86 motor with a newer side cover.

plus, if it were an '89 the rear cylinder studs would be way long. definitly not an '89 motor, even the bottom end.

Yeah, it's an 86. 96 also started Pe02e5500..., but no way in hell that's a 96 motor.
