whats up from central california

Post by bigjay »

<--- member number 175 right here folks  i had no idea this site existed untill i posted on the other site askign alisobob how tall he was and what kind of setup he had since it appears hes as tall as i am ( im 6'7", 345lbs), a member theres pointed this site out to me, glad i found it :D anyway, i have a completly dissasembled 87 500 with 94 plastics and subframe that will be going to my brother shortly while i find a rideable 5hundo, im looking at a few now hoping to go get one of them this weekend, ones pretty far from me the others about 2 hours, both are 87's with a few mods, im still keeping my options open, i have about $1,000 to spend which isnt alot but should net a decent older bike.. i have a huge collection og high end area rugs i can trade too :) :) anyone wanna make the wife happy and come home with some new rugs? im sure she'll allow more riding time.. call it an investment in approved seat time

this is the only pic i have of me.. sorry my snake is showing :)

Yo , yo ,yo.....

My steelie ( 1997) got down right comfy with the addition of some big bar risers, and lowered foot pegs.

Try looking into getting some "quad" bend bars. They are typically "high bend , low sweep" which is exactly what your looking for.

I'm not sure if lowering pegs are avaialble for your bike or not?

Stiff springs help too.... I ran .52 fork springs, and a 6.4 shock spring.

You cant believe how much your riding improves , once you get comfortable on the bike.

Glad you found us...

thanks for the welcome guys!! Bob thats one of the 2 bikes im heavily considering, ported = fun. the other bike is pretty damn clean, just had a guy email ( about 20 mins ago) with an 86, fresh top end, black and white ufo plastics and a few other extras for $875obo.. sometimes too cheap means issues though so i will definitly look the bikes over hard, freemers sounds the best but its about 7 hours south of me.

Pstoffers, were neighbors man :D im technically 2 streets away from the oakdale escalon border off of river.. lots of fun screw around riding out here, which is/will be 80% of what i do. never been to a climb, whens the next one?

go with an '87 or newer if you can. a lot of changes were made between '86 and '87. the '86 had its own ignition (which has some issues) and the short rod (so you can't buy a new crank for it unless you put a spacer under the jug). The '87 uses the same rod and ignition as the '01 and the '87 forks and shock are a lot better as well as disc rear brake.

stator coils failing (mainly the secondary one) I've had to replace mine. and from reading up, the '86 500 and '86-'88 250 and '86-'89 125 all had that same stator coil setup and were known for the secondary coil failures, that why ricky stator ALWAYS has a set of them for sale on ebay.
I mean, it took 21 years for mine to fail, but it did fail at a really bad time.

when it fails the bike keeps running until you shut it off, then it will never start again, I atleast was lucky enough to stop for a break at camp to never have it start again.
