Tractors.....

Was BSing with a buddy today about old times and started talking tractors, I pulled up all the ones I restored in order, the pics are the actual ones but the same. You can drive in england legally at 17 but you can be on a tractor at 13


1st When I was 12 a 1950s fordson major



2nd 1956 Nuffield Universal four, I worked this one for 2 years launching boats at the marina, my dad still has it in a shed at home. Fires first time every time



3rd International 404, bought it replaced 2 burnt exhaust valves, re-cut the head and sold it.



1940 something, grey fergison (same as ford 9n) re-wired it, tought the wife how to drive a tractor on it then sold it.



1980 Leyland 282 turbo synchro, bought siezed up and cab-less took me 4 months to fix up and find a cab, my dad used it for 4 years before selling it 2 years ago. 12 speed synchromesh tranny was very cool in a tractor! This one was also a trip as it was almost the same as the '56 nuffield only with newer toys, turbo, and a better tranny.

Yup and it looked even MORE unstable , what was the idea behind it? If the front wheels are in the same groove as the rears why modify something to make it unstable and run another track?

How stable does a tractor need to be? Most fields are flat and wheelspeeds are slow...... Wait a minute. You probably drive a tractor like you drive your pick-up or ride your CR500!

Most fields in wales are on some kind of hillside or angle, and yes I drove mine like anything else WFO baybe!

I got that red nuffield a good foot of the ground a few times

They were unstable and there were farmers having rollovers, but if you pushed the rear tires out as far as you could the chance of a roll over lessened.
The reasoning behind the tricycle front ends though wee because
1 Back in the day you used to cultivate between the rows of your corn or soybeans and the wide front axle would hit and break the crops.
2 Less soil compaction as the weight of the tractor was distributed over 3 rows instead of just two.

That's cool stuff. I have a 1941 Farmall H that I've been restoring, it has the front 2 wheels the way you hate them, and it has a hydraulic loader. It's not unstable, the rear wheels are wide and spaced far apart, the front end will twist and crack the frame before it tips over. I also have a nice 98 Kubota 4 wheel drive loader. It's a 8580, witha cab and a 85 HP engine, it kicks but!

I used to be a member of the antique gas and steam engine museum in Vista.
I had a an Allis Chalmers M crawler and a Deere MT
The narrow front ends are row crop tractors

Heres a sad pic, this is a pic I took of my nuffield from my trip last week.

Shes been left outside now for 4 years (I parked her outside for 10 but painted yearly and used daily) and not been moved or started in 2 years. There is a ton of water in the diesel tank and the oil cap had been left off(god knows how long ago) so the crank case is about a gallon over max (im guessing rainwater). Kinda made me sad really but I'd bet shed fire up first swing.

Yep thats why there is a tow strap hooked to the front.

Yup I tried hand cranking her once................ 4.3 4 cyl diesel with no decompression....... I couldnt get her over, I bet bob could tho
