right had this 89 few weeks now she ran fine then all of sudden wont start ,she will bump but will only run on choke even then she stalls sometimes when she is running engines sweet when going goes like a train splutters low down a little ,so i cleaned carb set carb to factory settings air mix /choke idlle checked all elecktricall components, fitted new plug and fresh fuel, i hav spark fuel but she just wont kick,i think she may hav been standing for a while before i had her heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

you might have an air leak, or bad reeds causing a lean condition at low rpms. The sputtering sounds like its either too rich from running with the choke on, or possibly bad reeds.
As far as kicking, if you have the technique down it should start every time. you do a few primer kicks (slow kicks with choke on while holding the klill switch) to get some fuel in there. Start AT TDC so you push slowly on the kicker until you feel the compression stroke which will give a lot of resistance, then as soon as it feels easy, thats TDC, you will feel resistance again when the piston goes back down. After finding TDC ratchet the kicker back up then whale on it, like seriously kick it all the way to the bottom, putting all of your force on the bottom. Its not like startign a 250, you don't stand on one leg and kick with the other, you get you whole body into it. I will actually get my left food up in the air while kicking to get all my weight into it.
on a properly tuned motor this will work every time.

you know I re-read it and only found one misspelled word, and 2 sentences were run-ons, but I was trying to describe something step by step without writing and essay. I'm not quite sure what you are talking about...
either way, not to start things on the wrong foot, make an into and let us know a little about you and welcome to the site.
I was just saying to make it easier for us to understand you, a more clearly written question might make things easier.

but anyway, pull the reed block and look for a gap in the reeds and while you are in there look for the notorious intake side piston crack. Finding it early can help you big time. The reeds might look fine, but the smallest gap between the reeds and cage can cause the problems you are describing. Also make sure all of your jets are clean. take them out and look through them to make sure.

I just wasted 10 mins of my life fixing thatpatgas wrote:Right I've had this '89 for a few weeks now, she ran fine then all of sudden won't start. I cleaned and set the carb to factory settings, I checked all electrical components, fitted a new plug and fresh fuel.
I have spark and fuel but she just wont start, I think she may have been standing for a while before I purchased her heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp

point taken guys i was in a bit if a rush.she doesnt seem to smoke really bad but has been standing for some time i think.I hav checked everything, such as reeds, cleaned carb and blown through with air line, checked all electrical componants, new plug ,fresh fuel.when i did get her going it was with full throttle trying to clean her out because i thought she was flooded.she ran but with nearly full choke to make her idle.I am looking towards compression problems ie piston, rings ,rebore .Am i right in thinking this could allso be a tell tale problem for poor starting?.i can actually push kick start dowmn by hand ,from what i remember you had to jump on these beasts to even crank them, sorry if bit vague but has been a long time since i had a 2 stroke and just brought her as a winter project .

sounds like you have a few problems. low compression being one and a out of whack carb being the other. if you can push the kicker by hand its definatly FUBAR in the top end. my '98 was the same way when i bought it. probly had under 100psi- but it still ran- and had a CRACKED cast piston
. check the piston for the hell of it, gauranteed theres a crack if its cast. ssssshhhhhh dont tell BOB though

I had a yamaha 400 snow mobile motor that would run fine, but was choppy down low, needed to have the idle screw all the way in and wouldn't run with the airfilters on. Turned out the cylinder plating had flaked off and it was blowing 90psi. Run a compression test, you can chase your tail for weeks assuming its a carb issue, when the carb is fine.
