newb carb question
newb carb question
ok just going over my carb and i took off the bowl and saw the jet. it says 180. i cant seem to find this pilot jet anywhere. and on the needle where is slides up and down in the carb it says 65. i am just trying to figure out how to adjust the carb and find out more about it. im a rookie at carb work and want make sure i can tune it properly when my frame gets back. it's a 92 bored .030 over boyesen intake with carbon fiber reeds. elevation is 0-1500. where would be a good starting point for jetting? and what mix would ya recommend. thanks guys and sorry for the dumb questions

I moved some of the Jetting info into being "Sticky's" ... This site dosent give jetting advice per se'.....
No one can jet your bike, but YOU!
Tossing out part numbers is actually a dis-service to the member asking, as it deprives him from learning the art for himself.
Read through the Sticky's..... Learn..adsorb...... try a few things.... and let us know how its going...
...then we will be much more assisting.

found it there was a piece of plastic covering it up. ok the jets were 180 and 55. needle was on 2nd clip from bottom. im gonna order a jet kit. i know stock is 170 and 55 and start on 4th clip. i do however have tons of jets from my 450x. (never adjust the carb and came with the bike already setup) the main jets look the same. i have a bunch and have a 170. should i try it? or is there more to it than that? can these jets go to more than one bike?

someone jetted that carb fat on the main for a reason, I would be careful about jumping that many sizes. I tuned hoofarted's bike and his is a '92 running a 55 pilot, 172 main and a dgn needle on the 3rd. I highly recommend getting a DGN, the stocker is a pile and it will never run perfect on it.

pardon my ignorance but what is a dng. I assume its the needle. where can I get one? or better yet are these carbs the best running for these motors? I don't mind buying a top of the line carb. the needle in it is stock I cross refrenced the number on it. thanks guys.

yes, thats the needle, translates to 1472n, the stocker is 1368n. www.sudco.com, like $3 or $5 or something, not much. Of coarse a pwk 39.5 is a great carb on these things and will run on the same jets and needle only the pilot should be a little smaller. I run a DGN needle 4th clip in a pwk 39.5 with a 60 pilot and a 188 main but I've got a lot of porting work and higher compression. runs great, the pwk makes for a good improvement.

stock jetting is a good place to start if it doesn't run good where its at. then you fine tune from there. every motor is different and will run differently with different climate and elevation. I would see how it runs as is, if it runs good, leave it, or fine tune from there. If it runs like poop as is, then I'd buy a dgn and every main jet from 168-190 and every pilot from 45-60 and get to work.

I got my PWK used off a kx500 for like $60, but you can order them new from sudco for around $200 and its about the same from CPW and all the ebay sellers.
If I were to order a new one, I would pay a little extra and see if they can give you all the jets and needles you need. I believe the needle keihin puts in the pwk is a DGK which will be a little rich for you.

what oil ratio and type do you run, that also has a huge effect on tuning. my cousins tuning was on an all stock '92 w/ a PC pipe and .080 (last over bore) running Maxima 927 at 44:1 all @~2500ft elevation. so with all those factors, your 2 bikes won't run the same, plus, even the smallest of changes can change how it will run, a different air filter, spart plug, different reeds, even a different piston, if yours is cast and his is forged, they will weigh different amounts, and the intake cut out might be slightly different. There are so many factors.

I don't know about a stocker being a pile. Mine runs perfectly.dannygraves wrote:someone jetted that carb fat on the main for a reason, I would be careful about jumping that many sizes. It had issues after being ported, but that / jetting was up to me.
In a sense : bling : is lucky, temps and elevations don't change much.

yeah, I bet the moderate temps, low elevation and high humidity will keep that thing running great. I was over exagurating about the needle, but it really isn't a very good needle for the motor, infact the 1372 that was stock on my '86 was a much better needle and I don't really know why they changed it.

you over analyzing this. its a air pump, and a very poor efficiency one at that- not a ferraridannygraves wrote:what oil ratio and type do you run, that also has a huge effect on tuning. my cousins tuning was on an all stock '92 w/ a PC pipe and .080 (last over bore) running Maxima 927 at 44:1 all @~2500ft elevation. so with all those factors, your 2 bikes won't run the same, plus, even the smallest of changes can change how it will run, a different air filter, spart plug, different reeds, even a different piston, if yours is cast and his is forged, they will weigh different amounts, and the intake cut out might be slightly different.
