PWK carb ?'s

Post by wastedyouth02 »

Just bought a '91 cr5 and cleaned the carb, everything was gummed up of course, the floats have no spring like action and the thing just looks down right dirty. For thoose of you running the pwk 39 or 40mm's should i just get one of thoose instead of messing around with the stocker, and whats everyones recomendations for a baseline on jetting.
sealevel
mostly wide open desert riding with some single trials here and there
fmf gnarly and turbine core 2(?) muffler
everything else appears to be stock

thanks

The floats arent supposed to be springy.

Why not just clean the PJ and see how it runs?

No what i mean by being springy is like if you turn the carb on its side and the floats can kinda free float like how you would do if you were chking there level they just bottom out but gas doenst come outa the overflow, is that normal? I did clean it and have gotten a few rides on it but its a mofo to start( that may just be my technique tho, i am 250lbs and can kick it over pretty good) takes me a good 10-15 minutes to get it started. Then itll idle ok while on choke, let it warm up itll rev up ok, but once its hot it doesnt wanna idle or clear out real good, and god forbid i stall it while im not untop of a hill cuz gettin it started warm is a joke (kinda extra motivation to not stall it :D) I was looking for more of is it worth it for the PWK before i start messin and spending money on this carb

Find the starting issue first, by swapping the carb you are just going to add to the headache.

Get it to run good on the PJ then start getting performance stuff.

The PJ's are bad about wearing out the slide and, in turn, wearing out the bore. Check that and that might make your decision for you.

From what I found on cr500riders.com, base jetting on the 38-39mm PWK is:

Main jet: 175
Pilot jet: 55
Needle: 1368N needle in 3rd groove*
Slide: 6.0
A/S: 1.5 to 2 turns out

* On the PJ's, at basically sea-level, I've always had to lean the clip one groove. I haven't tried a PWK yet.

The clip is the most important factor, besides the needle itself.

also sounds like your pilot might be lean if you are having starting issues. I would try fattening it up by turning the air screw in a little. Also the needle can play a factor if you give it a lot of throttle while starting. Definitly check out where your needle is.
