Cdi&coil issue

Post by paddy's lad »

I'm having issues with my brothers 85 cr500
It makes spark but not at the correct time I think (you kick it over not even a pop)
He purchased the bike non running ( owner told him it ran)
The question I have is could anyone tell me the testing sequence to check
All the electrics on this motor? Any help would be really appreciated
Thank you for reading this .
I'm new here & can't get enough info on these bikes
Just finished my 85 motor in a gen 4 frame (thing pulls like a locomotive )
Cheers, Pat

Kuma,
Thanks for the reply, the key was not sheared. I did find a spot where one of the wires going to the CDI had at one time shorted against the frame
In the old chassis. A direct short can't be good for a 28 year old CDI.
I don't have a service manual for the 85/500 so I can't be sure what's good or bad in the system. We built two af's both are 85 motors one in an 05 frame
And the other in an 06 frame. I wouldn't trade mine for a new bike. Pat

Update: no problems at all with service digital ignition,
The motor made so much compression that we had to pull start it
( couldn't kick it through) ordered a decompressor for the head
I was concerned we would crack the case if we kept on putting the boot to it.
It runs great now( once we bump it)
Thanks everyone for your input on our behalf, great site& I'm proud to be a member. Cheers, Pat
