My brother blew up my motor
My brother blew up my motor today.
I think he was riding it like a 4 stroke.
He started winding up 2nd gear.
I don't think he was on the pipe much at all.
Anyway.
Both cases are bad

Wow. The carnage.
I'm sorry for your loss.

The original piston and rings.
Now I don't know WTF to do.
Donor bike?
Buy new cases?
Is the crank and rod bad? bearing bad?
I never split the cases on a 2 stroke. Maybe have someone else with more experience deal with the project.
Who to send it to? Roosty? Eric Gorr?
Right now I'm just bummed out.

I'll go for piston failure, if its still on the original. Yeah with that much shrapnel I'd be splitting the cases to flush and check everything out. Rebuild using the info in the stickies if your just going stock and trying to control the dollars.
if there's one thing dad likes more than serenity… it's a two stroke engine on full throttle!
Wow. That's hard to look at.
Don't put all the blame on your bro, could have just been overtime for a topend.
You know those pistons will develop cracks if not replaced in time.
A skirt breaks off and gets banged around the bottom.
An overdue topend coupled with someone riding it like a 125 is a recipe for pretty much what you have there.
I'm guilty of it myself.
Look at it this way, you're going to have a new engine soon and you KNOW what's in it.
Splitting the cases is a breeze if you follow directions.
There's plenty of help from us, just ask.

pro-x or vertex piston? don't look stock with a taper in the wrist pin.
either way, i can fix it, I can save the cases if its not broke a threaded bolt hole area away.

That ws deinitely caused by a long-overdue top end rebuild. I dont think bad jetting would cause that.
BUT, unless I missed a picture, only one case half is bad?
With that carnage, you best replace the crank, or have yours rebuilt with a fresh rod kit.
I have never seen a 2 stroke piston come apart that bad, no damage on the top, it just plain broke apart. It must have been worn and cracked to shit, did you not hear any noise/signs from the piston?
My brother was the one riding it when it exploded. One time I thought I heard piston slap but it didn't hear it after that one incident?
This is my first smoker.
I am surprised the right case can be fixed. The left case has a small hair line crack that can be fixed?
What would you have to do to fix the right case? Weld in a new section?
Looking at previous posts that I have read issues on Hotrod cranks, they had issues difference size ends. My crank still spins freely. What damage to the rod and crank is not known until disassembly.
Is it cost affective to buy a Hotrod crank? Honda crank or have mine repaired and balanced?

Roosty has shown some magic repairs on some seriously messed up cases
You used the term "four stroking it"
Do you mean low rpm lugging of the motor which is/was the classic "four stroking" riding technique. Or the new moron way of bouncing it constantly off the rev limiter especially anytime it's in the air?
The 500s LOVE to be lugged and torqued around....
