After the last ride there were a few little things I needed to change and one that I thought really didn't matter but later found out that it did.
That little strap on the front number plate that goes to the cross bar on the handlebars, well my number plate didn't have it on there. It seems that its there for a reason and that reason is to keep the damn front brake hose from going behind the number plate every time the bike hits some whoops or goes off a jump.
I changed the rear sprocket to the 48 tooth and it helped a lot. Maybe motocross would be better suited for the 51 or 52 tooth but for open area riding the 48 tooth worked great. It still tops out fast but any smaller I think it would really hurt the low end gearing on the tight stuff.
I also picked up a used M5B 140/80-18 rear tire that I haven't got on yet. Its got about 1/3 life worn off it but that might help with the funny feeling they have when they are new. Those huge lugs make the back end sort of wander around a bit but when you open the throttle and need it to bite there's nothing like it.
I'm having some trouble with my PJ carb also. It seems that the choke / idle adjustment keeps screwing back down on me. I picked up a used 40mm PWK that I'm going to try and if nothing else at least the idle screw will stay where I put it.
I really wanted to test this bike out with some higher octane fuel BUT turns out the gas station that was selling it locally ran out and now all their pumps have a little sign "no gas". Before doing any other head work I wanted to see if that would cure the low throttle ping.
Last but surely not least I bought some FMF silencer packing but still haven't had a chance to dig into it yet. When I packed it the first time I was under the impression that it shouldn't be packed really tight thinking too tight would make silencer pretty much like a solid unit and not quiet things down. Everywhere I looked they say pack it as tight as it can be stuffed in there. I'll give it another shot and see what happens.
The last thing I can advise is after every ride check your motor mount bolts. I lost the bottom engine bolt last time out and it could be that I just didn't have it tight but I'm pretty sure I did. A little thread locker probably wouldn't hurt either.
If we don't get any rain tomorrow I might try to head out to the ATV park Saturday and see how it goes. I ran across a few guys on YZF 450's out there last time and I don't even bother with the quads anymore. I know there are people that have the new 450's and I guess to be polite I'm sure they run good. As far as the 450's that I have met up with there wasn't a single one that has put up more than a 2 second fight before I blew past them. I have no doubt that on a motocross track the old technology would not be able to compete with the newest bikes but get them out in a nice open area and its like an old dog chewing on a new bone so to speak.
