Yeah it got hot and seized. I was cruising down a dirt road. All of a sudden it bogged down and lost power and shut down. Rear wheel did not lock up.
The head nuts were barely more than hand tight when i tore it down. Hardly took any pressure to loosen with a wrench. Somehow they came loose and it started burning water and/or sucking air. Or it got so hot some other way that they came loose or things warped. Not really sure. I need to check for warpage but ive been busy lately.
The only reason i was woried about the rod is because of the specs. I figured a picture may help but apparently honda specs mean nothing. I guess i shouldnt ever check the specs on anything anymore right?

Naw man, I know what it's like.
I do the same thing sometimes, just for peace of mind.
I'm waiting to put my top end back on because I don't know how old the crank bearings are on my '85.
I'm doing it up with paint and all so if I take it apart to replace those it will probably be a loooong time before it comes apart again.
I think it's kinda an anxiety thing
Like Bob said, you can fudge some things but if it bothers you, do something about it.
One of my things is, I ALWAYS change out the piston pin, bearing and clips when I do a top end. Just a weird thing I do for peace of mind.
Another, I ALWAYS replace the top end on a bike I know nothing about, specially a 500.
My piston was good in the '85 but, I replaced it for peace of mind.
Peace of mind is worth more than the cost of the repair to me.

X2Peace of mind is worth more than the cost of the repair to me
thats why i rebuilt my bottom end twice when it was still in spec
also if the rod does bend, snap and take the cases out its gonna cost a lot more, and downtime sucks
the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.

Usually if they're pushed out like that they'll also have a crack and run lean. I'd check them very close.
I surface the cases if needed, ones that have that damage almost always do, the edge rolled back leaves it high by a bit and it won't seal everywhere.

You can surface them flat !!
If they have cracks you can weld them up and surface them!!
I've done two cases like that with cracks and no problems!!!
