Got into my 93, and the damage not near as bad as I'd feared. At least as far as the crank is concerned. Transmission side main fucked, the mag side was fine, as was the crank. HOWEVER............. every bearing in the transmission side is fucked. I guess after 18 model years, even Hondas need some help. Who knows how the previous owners manitained it, bit I'm pretty fanatical. Trans oil is changed every ride, for sure.
Since it's apart, and the assholes at Honda in Toronto decided NOT to ship the one bearing they could fuck me into buying from them (Honda availibiltiy only. Cocksuckers) despite the fact it was ordered on time and it's Friday now, I'm not riding this weekend. Quite possibly the last weekend to ride of the year, you never know around here. This motor is in a million pieces, so now's the time to make the call.
Some of you may have noticed I've been drooling on a big bore kit for this motor. Would like to stroke it as well. However, would a 2001 cylinder be a good option? I see by part number that the base and head gasket are the same, so is the cylinder interchangeable? I noticed that the heads are different, but that could be squish and compression to alter the power characteristics. The parts fiche shows that powervalve components LOOK the same, but I wasn't cross referencing 12,000 part numbers. I'm told the 01 motor is the one to have, but is it the grunt monster I'm looking for? Certainly the 01 jug would be the most cost effective way to go, but will it give me enough motor? I can get a local guy to port it down here, the man is a guru with the grinding tool. Bump the compression, port the shit out of it, grind the cases and go with race gas? Slam on a V-Force 3 and a 38 PWK to top it off? I know I can get a used Boyesen for it somewhat locally, but is that the best performance option for a low-end motor that I want? Read in MXA that V-Force and Boyesen tend to offer different power, depending on what you are looking for. At least as far as the later model YZ250s are concerned. Let me hear your thoughts, Hoons.
