Poll: Which pipe would serve me best?
Poll: Which pipe would serve me best?
I'm building a new engine for my AF conversion. Long rod, ported with fairly conservative port timing. Bike will be used for MX exclusively.
What pipe and silencer do you folks recommend. Obviously, the opinion of those of you that have tried both FMF and PC, and/or other options on their 500's is most valuable to me. All I'm finding new is the FMF Gnarly and Pro Circuit.
I'm not against buying something used, but it would have to look pristine.
Thanks in advance!

the pc will give you more high end rip and so probably getter throttle control. the gnarly comes on practically at idle and produces awesome torque but is less controlable.

Home porting--I haven't done it yet. Will simply add a few degrees to the exhaust for more overrev. It will be milder than my '85 engine in the '88 chassis.cmotodad wrote:I use a PC but have used a Gnarly too.My motor is stock and I prefer the PC as it seems smoother when the track dries out. What type or who did the port work for you? Thanks Bob

Sounds too good to be true, and I like the looks of the steel finished pipe. Is this seat dyno talk, or is there hard proof somewhere? Anyone else run a DEP?knobby668 wrote:Give the DEP a try. It runs like a FMF and Pro Curcuit combined.
Thanks everyone!

I can't give you proper feedback on mx track feel
I havent even rode the bike without an extention other than up and down the driveway
DEP pipes are more $, thinner material by the feel of it, and crappy on quality controll. This is pipe #2, the original I was sent came from england, was dinged and scratched bad before it was even plated. When the new one arrived i compared the two and the finish didnt even look like it was the same brand .
The motor i have it on makes it completely useless to use as a comparison also, there are members here who have them, i'll give them a push to post up. (mr2ace where are you?)

I spent a little time speeking with Bill of Bill's pipes about the old days and pipes, one of the things he mentioned that stuck in my head is that the works factory pipes are made from thinner material and make more power, from the sound of it quite a bit more power. the down side is that they only last one race before they crackRoostius_Maximus wrote:DEP pipes are more $, thinner material by the feel of it, and crappy on quality controll.
Well, I don't need that! PC is looking pretty good right now.Kuma wrote:I spent a little time speeking with Bill of Bill's pipes about the old days and pipes, one of the things he mentioned that stuck in my head is that the works factory pipes are made from thinner material and make more power, from the sound of it quite a bit more power. the down side is that they only last one race before they crack
And Roosty, I wasn't going to say anything about the dented up rear rim...

im gonna stick with the gnarly cause its thicker.... and hopefully i get better mileage cause its a low end pipe.... still revs to the moon with proper jetting, fresh silencer packing, reeds, and compression
11500rpm
11500rpm
the 450 will have less power and will be harder to start, and will be heavier, but to make up for it it will require more maintenance.

Odds are you will like it. More bottom than the PC and rips better up top. You do sacrifice a tad on bottom compared to the gnarly.nmdesertrider wrote:scored an old fatty off ebay for 50$, will let you know when i try it out
The CR500 is an acquired taste. If you don't like it, acquire some taste...
Would you happen to have a dyno sheet on this motor? that seems like a lot of R's for these motors2strokeforever wrote:im gonna stick with the gnarly cause its thicker.... and hopefully i get better mileage cause its a low end pipe.... still revs to the moon with proper jetting, fresh silencer packing, reeds, and compression
