89 CR250 seized questions

Post by sabreguy »

Yesterday Matt's 250 seized on him in 5th pretty much wide open. My question is it the do you guys think the cylinder needs to be replated? Here are some pics

The cylinder feels as smooth as silk but we did find some metal pieces laying between the crank and front of case . We tried to get them out but they dropped down into the case so we are going to split the cases and install all new gaskets and seals and bearings if needed. Just want to know what you guys think of the cylinder. Thanks

Geez, it's gonna be fun flushing that engine.
Probably WILL be better to open it up to clean it out.
Plating? Don't know, it's hard to get a feel from a pic.
What happened? Worn rings, bad jetting, overheat?
This came out of a 2001 CR250 and the cylinder was just fine.
It WAS brand new but the PO put it in backwards!

It was from an overheat the bonehead didn't check the coolant before we left. This is the first time this bike has been opened up since we have had it it ran tits so we never had a reason to break it open until now.

Clean it up, measure it. and inspect it thoroughly.
Nikasil is a lot harder than you think.
Unless the rings got into it, it might be ok.
But seriously, where did all that stuff in the bottom end come from?
There's grit everywhere including in the rings.
