Pro Circuit or FMF?

Post by Nodge »

Ok guys.
Argue your pipe choice.
Im about to order my pipe this week, for my Gen 1 build and Im not sure which one I want.

Ive done a search and couldnt find anybody who has tried both back to back.

Choices are: (in no particular order)
Pro Circuit Platinum
Pro Circuit Works (same shit, different finish)
FMF Gnarly
Others? (sometimes I find stock pipes are best)

I have not rode a 500 in a couple years, but my old one performed very nicely before it shit the bed. It was an 86 with stock exhaust.

I will be running intermediate open class motocross,
Also I ice race it in the winter, and do some play riding.
I also have plans of trying out some Super Moto this summer with it too.

WHICH PIPE? (and why)
Yah, I'm from Saskatchetoon!

PS. I know I will have to modify the pipe,

I am not concerned about that,
I want to know about how the different pipes run / make power.

Thanks. :D

I asked a similar question earlier this week. When I did some research, I found the following thread on the other site from TT. Hope I don't get banned from the banned site for referencing the evil other.

It appears from what is said the FMF Gnarley has more bottom end grunt but the PC pipe revs out better. I've always run PC works pipes and have been happy with their performance. I've never tried the FMF and can't really comment on it. I usually run the stock pipe until it gets beat beyond repair and then switch to PC.

Here is my take.
Stock=whatever, works, looks like crap on a blingy machine.
FMF=Low end power, strong long lasting pipe, heavy, looks ok, needs to be chromed.
PC Platinum=more over rev, better looking, finish is so so, doesn't last as long as the others.
PC works=same as above, needs chrome, price is silly for a bare pipe.
I like PC, FMF screwed me over in the past so I am against them for personal reasons. Stock is fine for a cr500, but to me it's the first thing you shit can when you start to mod the machine.

sounds like you'll want the higher reving more controlable power, in which case you probably want a PC. But for nasty trail rides, the FMFs are awesome, get you to the top of the rocky hill everytime. Plus the FMFs are a stronger construction, so since I ride in rocky desert, I like the thicker walled pipe. I want to get a PC for the dunes though.

I've run all 3 on the same bike, the fun factor is in the FMF as it delivers a solid hit , stock has a mild hit, PC no real hit just a little more pull on top. I'v got a extra brand new FMF nickle plated gnarley if you want it.
