I know a few Hoonsters have been talkin about measuring their own cylinders and such and I found a few dial bore gages on e-bay that would help them out.

The correct way to set any dial bore gauge is with a micrometer. First set the micrometer to the exact size you want then put the bore gauge in the micrometer and adjust it to zero. I like about a full turn on the bore gauge so it has some pre-load but with this type you sort of get what you get. The bore gauge I have the anvils screw in so I can set it wherever I want.

The 3.6 anvil means it measures in the 3.600" range or from 3.600 ~ 3.699 and you can move through that range with the 3 or 4 little washers they give you that go behind the anvils. What you said about them being exact, I'm not sure if a 3.6 anvil would actually get you down to 3.600 bore size or if you'd need to use a 3.5 with some washers. Anyway, as long as you can get it set with the micrometer it should be accurate.

that makes sense. i had to use one of the washers because using the anvil by itself was too small. next size anvil was too big.BrianPaul69 wrote:The 3.6 anvil means it measures in the 3.600" range or from 3.600 ~ 3.699 and you can move through that range with the 3 or 4 little washers they give you that go behind the anvils.
you like the .0001 or .0005 gauge ? i have the .0001, still havent checked it against a "known" hole to see if its accuracy is correct. if its within a few ten thousands im happy. cheap chinese junk

I prefer the .0001 or ten thousandths gauges myself just so you can creep up on the number your shooting for a lot easier when honing a cylinder. I have a few of the .0005 half ten thousandths gauges that work fine for something that doesn't need to hold a very tight tolerance.
I found some really nice old gauges on e-bay in the past and they are very accurate. A Federal gauge is hard to beat and the other looks like the old sunnen gauge but its made by Yuasa. A few other good names are Boice and Fowler.
Here is another nice bore gauge made by SPi in Japan.

funny deal on that dial bore gauge. read some reviews the ebay company selling it artificially inflates the price with false bidders. yesterday it was at $30, end bid today was $258. can buy that same setup brand new for $300BrianPaul69 wrote:I prefer the .0001 or ten thousandths gauges myself just so you can creep up on the number your shooting for a lot easier when honing a cylinder.
