Bought a 90 500 in rough shape for $410 on ebay
Sold the carcass roller for $360 on craigslist
Total $50 invested in motor
Bought a 2002 cr125 in poor shape for $450
Sold the motor, carb, elec, to a shifter kart guy for $540 shipped
After the fees and shipping the motor I am ahead on the 125 roller by $22.04
So Believe it or not only $27.96 invested in a motor and a gen 3 roller. No shit.
Bought a 2002 cr250 bare frame off thumpertalk for $110 shipped.
Bought a crank core from roostius maximus for $103
Bought crank bearings, clutch springs and gasket set with seals all for $95
Bought a wiseco rod kit for $79.00
Bought inner clutch hub for $59
Bought various small honda factory parts for motor $60
Modded 250 frame myself and cost to weld was $80.
Still have to buy all new plastics, tires, bars, grips, cables and some other minor things and pay to have my rod kit installed. Will also have to stiffen the suspension a bunch.
So this far into it and have a total of $614 invested. Not to bad. I get a good deal from my local parts unlimited dealer who I used to work for.
I have been buying and selling bikes and atv's for around 20 years so being able to do all the work myself really helps. The parts I bought used were really rough and need a restore so sometimes buying a really really clean roller is the way to go. I have re-sold what I had to to make up for it though.
Here is how it sits as of now and need to save a little more money to go a little further. Out of work right now but doing this on a tight budget. Frame is all converted and ready to go the glass bead blaster at my buddies shop.
