That's pretty awesome.
Isn't the Merlin engine the one that made the difference in the Mustang?
I'm not really up on it but like most things, I know a little!
Wonder what the performance stats are?

I believe so...back in the days when Britain could make things like cars, planes etc.

Bob, what's your opinion of the Hurricane v Spitfire? As a cultural icon the latter gets all the credit / public attention although both were instrumental in winning air supremacy during the Battle of Britain. My understanding is the critical contribution the Mustang made later in the war was to protect the B17 raids deep into Germany. Both different tasks and different times, but equally vital.

I was told that the wing of the hurricane was originally made as a frame with a cloth exterior and later skinned so they were much more rigid, where the mustang has a spar style and an outer skin?
In high G manoovers the wings of the mustang would flex so far that the guns were completely out of alignment, Bob told me he talked with a pilot who came onto a v formation and was going to take out the plane flying inside the v at the back, but during the bank it took to target the plane the wings had flexed so much that he took out the center lead plane. he said alot of the pilots who got a chance to fly the hurricane wouldnt go back to the mustang.

hahahaha, take what you will of this google seach of uncle bob...

The Hurricane gets shit on allot because it isnt sexy... but sexy dosent win wars....

Image

The Hurricane is a weapon, and as such scored someting like 65% of ALL RAF Air to Air Victories... many, many more than the Spit. Its pretty amazing for a plane designed in the 1930's.

It also saw combat in every theater ( Europe, Africa, Malta, Russia, Singapore, East Indies, etc..etc..)They even operated off Aircraft Carriers.

It was slow due to its rather thick wing and didnt have much rudder authority with the Merlin at full song, but turned well and while the Mustang has 6 x .50 Brownings, the Hurricane had 4 20mm Cannons which were more effective.

If you had a Hurricane behind you, it was pretty probable you were done for.

It was a great plane, that dosent get the credit it deserves.

Exactly right Stiles... The Mustang was so-so until the Merlin was installed in it, and it simply transformed the aircraft.

Lots of gas (in drop tanks) for range, lots of horspower and reliability, lots of guns, great visibility, and a great wing all made the Mustang lethal in any scenario...

Range and Speed are what the plane was designed for, to ecsort B-29's in much the same way the P-51 did for B-17's.

Range was crazy..... On 27 February 1947, a P-82B 44-65168 named Betty Jo and flown by Colonel Robert E. Thacker made history when it flew nonstop from Hawaii to New York without refueling, a distance of 5,051 mi (8,129 km) in 14 hr 32 min (347.5 mph/559.2 km/h).

To this day, it remains the longest nonstop flight ever made by a propeller-driven fighter, and the fastest such a distance has ever been covered in a piston-engined aircraft.

The plane only was in the Airforce inventory for a few short years, ans the jets replaced everything with a prop.

A interesting fact is that the early "Trainer " versions all were Merlin powered, and the production "Fighter / Escort" versions were all Allison powered after the licensing agreement given to Packard ran out..... and the Trainer version outflew the Fighter by a sizable amount.

Viva` los Merlins!!!!!

Holy fuk for once me and bob agree on something!!!

The spitfire gets all the credit for winning the air war when it was the hurricanes doing most of the work and getting most of the kills. There were a shitload more hurricanes than spitfires.
