Surging question

Post by robfromga »

Sorry if this is elementary.....

Im having a weird off idle-deceleration surge. As the motor decels I get maybe 2 or 3 small surges. Here's what Ive done... I pulled the leftside cover and that crank seal is good. Ive also, for what its worth, sprayed some starting spray at the cylinder to case seal, the case seals(case halfs)...kinda all around the motor. No change in engine RPM. The bike idles and starts fine.

I did play with the air mixture screw, it was at 2 turns out. Turned in the bike dies, at about 2.5 turns the idle picks up pretty good. Havent cracked open the carb. I replaced the pipe, the old PC pipe had a small crack and I thought that was the culprit.

Its been a while since I had a bike with a carb, all my track bikes are FI'd

its your slow speed jet bumb it up a number or 2-3 then ajust your air screw until you get the best sounding rpm idling you should be about 3/4 to 1.5 turns out when finished.
and no surging when hot wacking the throttal open

The one that looks like this.

The holes are really small. Check for any clogs before you go up in size, you might just need a new one of the same size..... with all the holes open.

Cool thanks. I need to pull the thing apart and see whats what in the carb, the PO did nothing to the bike, just rode it...typical honda it just works!

It seems the problem became more noticeable with colder air temps? We're in our "winter" here...its been in the 40s-50's lately.

And ya know I may have pushed this along, The PO ran 50:1 and for whatever reason Ive been running 40:1, and seriously I only did it because I "thought" it was wiser....should I just run the 50:1? Still obviously wanna check the carb.

40:1 is better for the rod big end bearing.

Its the hardest thing to oil.

I'd stick with it.
