Back pain, what to do

Post by Ported&Polished »

Ding dang it, I woke up yesterday with lower back pain. This morning felt better, but after a day of driving and some light work, it is all stiff and feels sore. I havn't taken anything for it, but think I might right now. I hate the lower back pain because it shoots down to the back of my knees, and makes getting up, or walking hurt. What do y'all recommend for a quick fix or pain relief? Heat? Cold? Drugs?

From experience ( I have a broken back ) stay away from the meds if possible. It's a quick fix and that's about it ( had some issues with those too  ) Sounds like a sciatic nerve problem (sorry for the spelling) That is what might be shoting the pain down the leg. REST is best for those and long drives are not going to help. When I hurt mine that was the first thing the doctors said. DRUGS ARE BAD, say that in Mr. Garrison's voice to be funny. Streaching is the best with some anti-inflamitory. I bet my spelling is sweet right now, I perfer Vodka sometimes. Hope you get better soon, my only option is fusion, and no Brit not the FORD

Sounds like you got something pressing on a nerve. Not good. Forget the Doc unless you want some good stuff.

Crazy, I hurt my back yesterday too. :? Just bending down to pick something up. Feels like a pinched nerve or something, but this to be happening to me fairly regularly. Guess I'm just getting old! Feeling better today though. :D

You guys all get your periods at the same time, too?

Terrance, stretch your back in the morning and drug the hell out of it at night. Repeat until symptoms improve.

I had a really nasty back injury about 3 years ago, moving my engine hoist out of my down staris appt (don't ask why I had an engine hoist in my downstairs appartment). It hurt like hell, but after my moms neck injury and seeing what the pills did for her, I didn't take anything and dealt with the pain. My boss at the time told me that he had a back injury years ago and it went away when he strengthened the muscles in his back by working out a bunch. At the time I was server production and had to lift 150lb 20TB NAS devices, so whining about my messed up back was not an option. I had some of the pc production guys help me during the day, but I usually worked until 2am to get things out anyway. The pain was slowing me down so I was staying late everyday. anyway, one night I just said fuck it and didn't ask for any help and forced it. well, guess what, I was all better the next morning. I must have popped whatever was out of place back into place. Something similar happened with my broken ankle too. so thats why I'm a firm believer in not sitting on your ass and eating pills and instead working through it. thats just my opinion though.

You say that the pain shoots down to the back of your knees, as in both knees? Do you have any associated tingling, numbness, or any similar symptoms in any other part of the legs including your feet and toes? Had you done any activity the day before you started to have back pain that might have initiated it? Or did it come on without provocation? Last question, have you had this happen before?

If it is true that the pain radiates down the backs of both legs to the backs of the knees, it is more likely that your back pain is do to muscle tension in the lower back/glutes, which is in turn putting tension on your ham strings. This would be especially likely if you have no other symptoms occuring in your legs like those that I mentioned in the last paragraph. Sciatic nerve pain is usually associated with pain in one leg radiating from the lower back, laterally down the thigh and often times down the calf. Symptoms can involve the toes and are not limited to pain alone. Rarely does it occur in both legs.

A quick test: Sit on a chair and slump your shoulders forward. Then, lift each leg, one at a time. Does this make your symptoms worse? If it does, then what I've said above is likely correct.

So, what to do? I'd start off with a prescription strength dose of any well tolerated NSAID, like ibuprofen. Start with say, 600mg of ibuprofen every eight hours on a full stomach for say, two days. See how your pain reacts...you could even start off with 600mg twice on the first day and drop it down to 400mg's twice on the second day. Don't go for more than 3 or 4 days at that dosage as it likely won't be necessary. Note: Do not take this dosage of ibuprofen if you suffer from GERD (chronic acid reflux), stomach ulcers or stomach bleeding, kidney disease/failure, or if you are on any blood thinning medications.

Once the pain has subsided, start a regular routine of stretching exercises focusing on stretching the ham strings. You would also do well to do exercises that focus on strengthening your pelvic and abdominal muscles in order to better support your spine/lower back. This works well to help mitigate disk herniation/degredation.

That said, if it turns out that your pain is truly sciatic nerve pain, then whichever NSAID that you try will likely work as well to relieve compression on the sciatic nerve root involved.

If your back pain does not resolve after trying these things, I'd go see your family physician (assuming you have one) and look into getting further work-up or physical therapy.

And if one was concerned about causing a 'repetitive movement' injury, you could just ask her to 'back on to it'. But I digress...

Similar to Danny's story, I had a shooting pain through my mid to lower back whenever I sneezed after my over-the-bars trip last December. Back in May, I had another unexpected trip over the bars and it seems to have fixed whatever the first one caused. No more pain.

Hmmm...Some physical therapists and chiropractors will use 'manual therapies' to as they say, re-align certain joints to relieve nerve compression. Maybe you do so inadvertantly!

Regarding my lengthy post above, you can also have a combination of pain caused by sciatic nerve compression and lower back and leg pain caused by muscle tension/tightness.
