which bike to convert.....

Post by sugarshane »

ok here goes,
I currently have a 07 CRF250R chassis minus wheels and rads for a conversion. But, I also have a possible trade for 2006 CRF250X complete running bike for my 04 YZ250. My YZ bike has 7 rides (I think) from the factory. I say I think because he previous owner claimed 2 rides on it and then on the 3rd ride he looped it, got scared and parked it. I have 4 rides on it. the bike looks like new except for a couple pipe dings where he dropped it. I did a compression test on the YZ and it has 190PSI. So I wanna make sure the trade is what I want before giving up the bike. the X is street legal already and I was curious if it would remain street legal after putting the 500 in there or will i have to do emissions when I register it. Also, will the X motor bolt into the R frame as long as I swap sub frames? I don't see any reason why it wouldn't but I wanna make sure before I try. will it be possible to make the R street legal? I have a buddy that is interested in buying the 07 R if I put the X motor in it. if not, I may just keep it for a play bike. I also have a 91 500 and a 00 500 and a spare 98 motor for the conversion, so don't think I'm going to get away from 2 smokes. The X was just rebuilt about 20hrs ago with beryllium valve seats and new valves. Documented maintenance and valve adjustments. spark arrestor, R&D remote (flex) fuel screw, GPR steering stabilizer/sub mount, Trailtech Endurance computer, Pro-Taper big bar, Clarke 3 gal tank plus stock tank, skid plate, seal skins/new fork seals, new battery, TM designworks chain guide/slider, Works connection clutch lever/perch, New rear rotor and pads (EBC), New Mohard rear brake carrier, Tusk handguards, Fastway large footpegs, Devol radiator guards.

also, from those of you that have ridden the R and the X, which do you prefer and why? Is all this worth my time or should I just stick to converting the R?

the previous owner of the R stuck about $1100 into the suspension (valving, springs, triples, shock linkage...) so that is what will be used on the which ever bike that gets converted for the 500.

make sure that the shock linkages are the same, i think the x model is different, it wouldnt work on my build so i have it laying around. Im not sure of differences in frames but the x runs a 18" rear wheel and softer suspension. you benefit from the x with a more accessible airbox and all the stuff that makes it street legal + you have all those great aftermarket parts already on it, go for it
