Fixed the squish and volumed for 100 octane minimum. But still did not fix my illusive brown plug issue!

Not bad for a cell phone eh? Another needle (A715/289R, 1st clip) (4th one) and now the bike feels titties but the plug is still either greyish white (low 160's main) or black (mid to high 170's main) and no brown in between...

Oh well...

some folks dont realise how easy it is when you got a manual basically giving you the answers. starting from scratch when you have a different carb on the bike can be a pain in the ballz. going through same shit my self. figured the carb setup from my smaller ktm would be good starting point... wrong, not even close. my honda setup, not even in the ballpark either. this stupid thing has pwk (38 i think) and its still slightly hanging and popping when your crack the handle. i remind you its 58 pilot at 6300'. WTF. 100% positive theres no airleak in the cylinder or reed area. 99% sure seal aint leaking. hopefully local shop has a 60 i can try. fukin thing is pissing me off. carb is pretty old so that could be the problem.

If you see the tune fluctuate constantly take a close look at the slide area. Jeffs PJ was so worn out that the slide would close in a different spot every time. Even putting a new slide in didnt help since the slide is chrome plated and the carb body is pot metal, which one do you think looses the wear war?

tune aint fluctuating. problem is i had to dial this carb from scratch, had no "good" reference to start from. my other bikes setups werent even close. shop only had a 62 so ill try it. if its still popping then something fukked with the carb. got another slide laying around but its in worse shape.

Well, I'm no rocket scientist.... but I would guess you need a 170 - 172 main.

i see what your saying but there could be exceptions, also still cant rule out the slide being too worn. as long as it aint poppin then its good enuff. got the 62 in and fired it for a brief minute so the neighbors didnt get pissed. sounded better for that short time. gonna load up and get out of the hood to really check it out. report later what happens.

what you think bob oh great master of the iron horse :D

A: try a 65
B: throw carb in the bush
C: ride it as is

danny you know what the problem is ? got another pwk but the slide is fukked. could try that carb but would have to use this slide.

I agree with Wook, the throttle cable is definitely hooked up...

Doesnt sound lean to me...it would be "zinging" and hanging idle after you blip the throttle...

cable is old and that could be it. idle aint really hanging, just does that popping shit. probly just ride it and worry about new cable later. still dont see why the 62 works, common sense says its not right. other bike has pretty much same carb with 38/40

My guess is once you get over a certain size pilot that the low vacuum of a 2 stroke cant really pull any more fuel than it already is...Its kind of like having a fuel pump emptying a large gas tank, if you increase the pick up hose diameter past what the fuel pup can flow, no further flow is increased, does that make sense?

Like an air screw, even if you unscrew it past 3 turns it doesnt really lean anything anymore since the orifice only flows so much. So that can throw you off as well...

nice :D
Different fuels & different stroke oils all burn in different rates and leave different burn caracter marks on your plug.

Yeah I know plug checks can be deceiving but I have tried pump gas, race gas and I have run synthetic and bean oil to see if that was the cause but each time I got the same results. Thats when I learned of the squish issues these bikes had. I measured mine and found an .062 clearance. Thats why I sent the head off to have it corrected (0.040) and had the 100 octane dome cut (to raise compression for more low end, something this motor has ZERO of). I havnt done a primary compression test since im confident its not consuming trans oil because I use Motorex which is bright green and when I did the top end there was nothing but clean red oil in the bottom end. Im not loosing any trans oil level and with this tune I get zero spooge, just a few tiny speckles on the number plate and zero smoke from the pipe once warm.

60 pilot is waaay too big. On my big motors, the pilot got only smaller than stock
Not sure what your porting, compression and HP targets are, but ignition timing is also critical to alleviate the mid rpm, full throttle detonation.

i cant explain it, never had any other bike do that popping bullshit. carb and cable are old and worn, probly one or the other or both. with a new carb it probly would be around 40ish. i dont know and dont care right now. got a big ride coming next weekend so ill worry about it later :D
