Starting woes
Starting woes
I am just about at whits end trying to get this thing started, got spark... got gas... also have had a couple of horrible kickbacks one of witch put me out of commission for a few days where the kick starter took a chunk out of my calf, Anyway, trying to figure this out. I have the Service Honda Ignition in it with a new 00 stator plate, can someone put their motor at TDC , take the ignition cover off and take a picture for me, the only thing my tiny brain can work up is the ignition is horribly too advanced. I will try to post a picture of mine tomorrow.

i thought the s/h was plug and play ? i cant see that being the problem unless the cdi is faulty. you using that setup for the lights ? if not i would think about putting a stocker back on. honestly i dont recall anyone having good luck with s/h ign, but people still keep buying them for some reason .
one thing you could check is the airgap. it wouldnt make it kickback but it will make it real hard to start depending how far out it is.

Go to http://www.cr500riders.com and read the threads about the Service Honda ignition. I believe the collective wisdom today is that the Service Honda implementation does not allow the pickup to sit as close to the rotor as the manufacturer Electrosport would like. Some folks have modded the backing plate and when the pickup is re-positioned starting is just fine.
I junked my Service Honda ignition and went stock. Cold my bike takes 5-6 kicks to start, warm it starts 1-2 kicks. I don't need lights and would happily pass my two un-used ignitions on to someone that does.

I tried to find the thread(s) on the other web site but the search function is useless. I am wondering whether the gap that SH implemented and Electrosport needed were two different things hence the built-in problems. Send a message to Lewisclan and get the info on his experiences and set up. He was part of the original thread, had the same problems as I, but when adjusting the pickup they went away.

Ok, tried to fire it up again I lowered the gap to .009 tried the S.H. rabbit kick,,.. it kicked me back.. I put a little gas in the cyl then kicked it,,. she went ping ping ping then , wham kick back thru the kick starter, ? is it normal for the 500 to want to kick back thru the kick starter when they don't light. seems to me after a few pings the rpm dropped then as I was raising my foot to take it off the kicker (about half way up) the kick back was the last umph or event.

seriously i would try to get a refund if all possible. otherwise post it up to ebay. or fuck around with it for 2 months and hope some how you can make it work. i think your cdi is malfunctioning to be honest. kickback occurs because the spark is way too early and blows the piston backwards and usually shoots a backfire back through the pipe.
the S/H unit or any part of it wont work with the stock stuffagent wrote:Do ya think I could wire the stock box to the S.H. stator ? .. I have the MSD unit But that will require a total rewire of the bike , I have all ready wired it twice and still have not ridden it.
