FWIW, I just installed a 13oz unit on my 89 CR500. Im only 150 lbs/5'-7" and I really like the way the bike rides now. I DID blow through a turn or 2 due to lack of engine braking..., but overall, I really like the tractability, and now the engine doesnt stall as easy. I am pretty new to this bike ...

Hey there Bruce. Didnt know you were on this site. The Pigfest was a blast for sure. The magnesium fire, and that guy on the minibike was something else! Ive recently picked up a 89 CR500 to mess around with. Waaaay different than my XR for sure!!

Worn seals let air in. Extra air = lean condition. Lean = no smoke.

The mag side seal almost never goes out and if it did happen to be bad the bike would be sucking air and idling high.

+1 on the RIT dye thing. You can dye/change colors to most plastics w/that stuff. Ive seen gas tanks to skateboard wheels done w/RIT. All w/ excellent results.

My 89 CR500 seems to run great, except for, I cant seem to get it to idle. There is no excessive smoke, no spooge out the exhaust, and it seems to have plenty of bottom/top end power. Would a worn crank seal(s) cause bike not to idle? I would have thought a air leak would cause a really lean ...
