Not sure what type of pipe guard you are after, but e-line did make a carbon fiber guard for the 500 at one point.

I am bumping up to a 40 or 42 pilot now that the temps are below 80. The surprising thing to me is the 160 main... I still think the little 250F airbox limits flow. I have ported it with six 5/8" holes on each side of the airbox cover to get more air in.

I ride MX only, and at Cycle Ranch i am WFO ...

As some of you may know, I built an A/F with a 2008 Gen4 CRF250R. At first I was running a stock PJ with Pro Circuit recommended jetting for my pipe. Bike ran good, started and idled, but plug was dark, and it just seemed real fat to me. I picked up a PWK and had to start over on all jets. Got it ...

I have been trying to get the plug color off of coffee black since I put my AF together. I think the 06-09 250F airbox is too small for the big lung on the 500. I always use C-12 and 927 at 32:1

I started with a PJ with 170 main 48 pilot 2 turns out on air screw. 6.0 slide 1369 needle 2nd from top ...

Reminds me of the 1985 CR500 I raced on the ice in 85..

I was 15 and it ruined 2 pairs of winter boots before I figured out that I would have to suffer frozen feet in MX boots if I didnt want a broken foot..lol

I really enjoyed the build. But if I can sell my Gen 4 Ill strip one of my Gen 5's and do another build.

Why would you want to go through another complete build for a bike that would really not be much better?

So when I ride my 2011 CRF450 back to back with the 500, its not such a strange feeling. Although I have the same bars grips, pegs etc.. The Gen 4 feels bigger, wider,longer than the Gen 5 ...

If I pulled the Engine/pipe/carb /electrics... What would a 2008 CRF250 with a dogger full cradle replacement be worth?? I may let this one go, so I can do a Gen 5

So while I waited for needles, pilots and some main jets to get here, I decided to try the 1369 needle in top clip, 38 pilot, 6.0 slide and a 170 main.

After getting A/S set bike started a d idled good. Went out on the road and did some 3rd gear roll on's. The bottom end burble was much better ...

Well I just learned a valuable lesson today... My 1472 needle, was a OEM KTM needle.. Apparently the 1472J is not a DGN at all on the cross reference chart... Worked out to be a richer needle!!!
Thanks to Sudco tech line, I am on the right track now.

I think the airboot was 1998 CR250 and the red rubber is a piece I cut off the end of my coolant hose. I added it to a stock Honda rubber grommet to add some thickness.

1472 is a DGN, so should i try a DGQ (1474)?? or go leaner?

OK, so with the pilot a 38 and A/S 1-3/4 out seems to be good. Im back to 1 kick to start, and idles fine. Once i pull away its all garbley and blubbery before cleaning out . Up top its good.

So I dropped the needle (1472) top clip. Cleaned it up, but still blubbery. What is the next series of ...
