TWIN AIR CAN SUCK MY BALLZ!!!!!

Post by dannygraves »

So, I was trying to figure out what the grinding noise coming out of my bottom end at Dumont was... I lifted my seat and this is what I saw. The last owner said he had 2 rides on that filter before the bike sat in storage for 6 months. I serviced it right before dumont and had maybe 6 rides on it since I did my a/f conversion.
This is a serious hoon tragedy here! :x

Uni, No-Toil, stock, all others are what ever. And a 3 pack of filter skinz is very good insurance when duning.
Don't Clyde it, ride it!

Dont laugh so hard, we used to toss a few smackers in th direction of a needy Hoon all the time.

We should resurrect the tradition with Dan-Man... you know he's splitting the cases on this one...

Whats that pay-pal address Dan?

Wow - thats generous! And I am merely kidding with Danny - as I know him quite well. But the Gen1 kit sales will help... ;)

if you look in the pic of the air box, you can see some grease still left from where I grease the mating surfaces. You can also see where some of that grease got on the middle area and the sand stuck to it.
The last owner of my a/f chassis had it on there and said he had 2 rides on it, I don't know if thats true or not. I was planning on buying a Uni after this trip just because that filter felt really thin and weak compared to the uni in my '86 airbox. Should have done it BEFORE this last trip...
I'm not sure what the twin air filters are made out of, but if they are latex based, that would explain it falling apart. I can't buy latex gloves here in this climate, if they sit with the box open for a week in my garage they will crumble when I put them on.

what does everyone think about the K&N with the sheat cover thing?

Does anyone use that sheat cover thing on a foam filter?

K+Ns are pretty crap at filtering fine stuff untill they are half blocked then they filter great, I would just use a new foam (insert favorite brand) with plenty of greese on the mating surface (more than you had) and a decent sticky filter oil applied librally.

What oil is everybody using? I was using the spray Uni stuff, spraying inside and out.

Just get the UNI and be done with it. It's the "no regrets" solution. It will flow more air than your 500 ever will anyway. K&N has it's place, but its not on a dirt bike.

I use the UNI stuff inside and out spraying the filter while its inside a plastic bag, then I scruntch everything up to make sure the oil is in all the pores.

There's only a couple names I trust implicitly when it comes to maintaining my bikes. Bel-Ray is one, Uni is another. Who cares which is better or best, just use a good one.

I found the best oil to use is the type you pour out of the bottle and work it through the entire filter. Makes a huge mess if you're not wearing gloves. Or put it into a bag - same result. At least that was what was recommended to me by De Wayne (you know how that is Danny). I've been doing that for years with success - also they were UNI filters. And the grease on the lip is the last thing.

That filter did look pretty thin and brittle from the pix though.
