First AF Project Started

Finally got my first (and probably only) AF project started. I have
been acumulating parts for several months. I have the suspension
and wheels, and I just picked up a frame and swingarm from a
Honda dealer that was parting out a 2008 CRF250 right out of
the crate.

I started assembling the engine a few days ago and just finished
the bottom end. I hope to have the rest of the engine finished
within a month. Once the engine is done, I'll start on the frame.

I am posting some pictures of a few of the items so far.

nice covers, where did you get them?
I got the clutch cover from a guy in the UK that machines
them from Aluminum. The cover is pretty stout and
comes with the oil feed casting used on the CR250.
That casting needs to be ground off for the 500.
Here's a picture of the back side of the cover.

The ignition cover is a Magnesium HRC part I managed
to get along with a trick HRC close ratio transmission
from an old "friend".

The forks and shock are the Pro Circuit "works" suspension
they sell.
where are u located?
I'm a Cali transplant temporarily living in TN.

In addition to the works tranny, I had all the internals REMed, the
reciprocating assembly balanced by Crankworks, Hinson Clutch
outer. The cylinder and head will be done by Eric Gorr (mo-betta),
VForce 3, Keihin 39mm PWK, vortex ignition controller with a 2000
Honda CR250 stator and flywheel and a Pro Circuit pipe and silencer.
Should be a strong but useable powerband.

Here is a picture of the REMed transmission clusters and shift drum
assembly. The metal is super slick now.

The project is slow going because I'm splitting my time between
two other builds. A 1978 CR125 sleeved down to 100cc for the
Marty Tripes 100cc Revenge Series and a 2001 CR250 engine in
a 2008 CRF roller. Here is a picture of the 250 engine just
completed.

I'll post some more pictures when I get the 500 engine finished.

Again - Nice! Liking that 250 motor. Wanna trade me for my old 01 250 motor? Needs a little refreshing. LOL.

Reason I asked is bc theres another "dogger" on a different forum I visit.

I imaging the "REMed" trans parts make shifting much easier? I didn't know HRC made a close ratio trans. IIRC, there was the wide-ratio.

Those pictures are so beautiful I was tempted to rub one out. Very nice stuff. That's cool about the sleeved down CR125. Back in the 70s I raced the 100 and 125 expert class. Seriously, the 100 class was huge back then and when my TM100 wouldn't start because I put an Elsinore carb on it and swingarm/shock a friend let me race his sleeved down CR100. It really wasn't any faster than my TM which was heavily modded due to not having the correct head, but the handling was supreme and I annihilated the first moto. Second moto I holeshot and going up the hill the head gasket blew. I've ran across a dude on eBay who is selling Noguchi stickers and have them on my truck and tricked out RZ350. The nostalga thing is cool. Keep the pics coming it's looking awesome. I'm in Huntsville, AL by the way, and started my AF yesterday for the first time..

Your a patient man! I built my AFC and didn't even get new plastic... Just not enough money to do it all. Was either finish ugly or not ride this season. Up here in NY the snow is right around the corner. Gonna do all the motor suspension and pretty stuff then. Had the itch and just needed to ride it. Beautiful start and good luck brother should be nasty ride all said and done! :D

I have one of those aluminum igniton covers too, all the magnesium ones i've ever seen are dark gey. i've held one of those 5 bolt ones off gobers bike, its big and wide, glad to see someone did a decent reproduction of them as 6 bolt and the proper width.

I'm sure this will be a really nice build.
I've followed your other builds on other forums, mainly because I have the same bikes but also because the pics and documentation are first rate.
Can't wait for more.

the 100 class was huge back then
Yes it was. You could count on a full gate every Sunday.
I started out racing in that class on a Super Rat - tons of
fun. When I first heard about this 100cc Revenge Series,
I knew it would be a hit.

The bike I'm building will be a replica of the FMF Package
racers that were tearing it up back in the day. I figured
since the bike is essentially a 125, it will be more than
enough to handle a stout 100 engine. Here is an FMF add
showing the bike I'm doing.
Image
I will be using repro body work and a plastic fuel tank
along with modern rims, shocks, fork emulators, etc.
But it will be a 1978 CR125 frame and engine with a
repro FMF "Godzilla" Aluminum swingarm. The rules
for the series are hilarious. The class you race in is
based on your weight, not skill level.
the snow is right around the corner
Still in the 90s here.
Can't wait for more.
Thanks. I think you will really like this one.
Nice to see some different builds come up ie: the 01 250 deal
I'd like to take credit for that idea, but Service Honda started doing
that conversion a year ago. If you are a Honda fan, this is the 250
that should be being built now. The ultimate 250 engine combined
with the best (geometry) frame Honda produces. I'm taking it as
far as I can afford.

I know this is not a "250" site, but if you follow this 500 build, you will see
essentially what will be going into the 250. Can't wait to race it heads
up against the 250 thumpers.
