Yup

I heard that the crowd wanted to beat the driver up. Heard they were throwing rocks at the dude.

Yeah, this story took a little while to build to this point.
I don't blame the driver at all, how could he be blamed?
The promoter can't be held either, how do you fence off a desert?
The BLM will probably use this to further restrict offroad activities.
Spectators should use some common sense.

Seems like the way society is nowadays. Avoid responsibility and play the blame game. If its too dangerous, just ban it because the masses are too stupid to think for themselves. The accident is a tragedy. My condolences to the family and friends of the victims. But that's a risk you take when spectating. So if a baseball fan gets impaled by a home run because he isn't paying attention, do we ban baseball too?

X 2!!

I still can't believe the fans were blaming the driver. Fucking morons. They showed a video on the news and the spectators lined the edge of the racing line with trucks going by at probably 50 -60 mph. That shit irritates me.

You can see how close to the line the people are in this video. It also looks like he had to hit the breaks cause of a slower truck in front of him.

This kind of shit happens all the time.

Nobody forced anyone to attend these events.

People need to make up their own minds whats o.k.....

I missed the memo that said life was 100% safe.

Nonetheless we'll pay the consequences.
Lawsuits, and the only one with money is BLM
BLM will restrict the hell out of it all and CA state will follow.
Better enjoy it till it lasts

I blame the spectators......anyone who is that stupid to line up on the edge of a bumpy dirt track w/ vehicles flying by is just asking for trouble......just like the idiots who line up on the sides of rally courses...

I've often though of this happening at the Glamis sand drags.

Now if this happened in Mexico there would be no lawsuit.

People have to be smart in there own judgement, something the Gov desparetly thinks it must control. Hopefully the fallout is minimal.

It happens in Mexico you just don't hear about it

I have a picture when I raced a class 1 car during the Baja 1000 i was 5 feet in the air perfect jump and people standing on both sides like a picket fence.

Sorry folks but that"s the way you have to look at it when your racing.

I've seen them stand so close they try to touch the cars / trucks going by.

this ones just awesome.

I heard on a news clip today that the BLM was looking into restricting offroad races. Like who didn't see that coming.
The BLM just plain sux.
A riding buddy of mine says he has to deal with them when he goes hunting out west. He says they have landlocked hunting areas that you can't get to without trespassing. Permits are a pain in the ass too he says.
I guess we have it good on this side of the country but, it sure would be nice to have those riding areas closer. Best of luck fellas.

btw-I had to suffer through that fat ass avatar to watch the Glamis video but it was worth it. Man, that's a big ass.

Well here it is. Just announced:

Los Angeles Times | Aug. 19, 2010 | 11:04 a.m.

The federal Bureau of Land Management on Thursday suspended, for now, all future off-roading events by Mojave Desert Racing Productions, the promoter in charge of the race where eight spectators were killed on Saturday.

The suspension will remain in place while federal officials investigate the cause of the tragedy at the California 200 off-road race in the Lucerne Valley.
