So i have the chance to pick up an 88 or 89 CR500 engine for $500 with electronics and pipe. supposedly it ran when it was installed. i was looking for a 94 and up for an af project. is this a decent deal or should i stick it out for a 94+? are there any issues for 88/9's that i need to look out for. i know the case would have be drilled for a larger swingarm bolt.

89's are good MX motors. 88 requires larger hole, 89 is the right size. Look at the jug, 89 will have the water pump connected above the pump not behind the cylinder where the reads are.

It's worth $500 easy if you can ride it to test it.

so i tried looking up the engine number and it is PE02E-5501145. According to the numbers that i have found, it could be an 86, 87 or a 96. how can I figure out which one it is? its about and 1 1/2 drive and I would like to know what it is before I make the trip. any input?

so i finally got him to send pics from his brothers cell phone and it is indeed an 86 or 87. with that being said, is that a decent price or should i wait to find a long rod? i have never ridden a 86 but from what I hear they are a bitch to ride.
