OK, say you just got a promotion at work (like me  ) and wanted to get a second bike. I am thinking about a 4 stroke, electric start, headlight, tail light, factory kickstand kind of bike. One that I can just hop on, hit the start button and either put around with the kids or beat on a trail/track. What would you pick? WR450, cfr450x, ???

I really would not mind a street legal one, but it might have a few too many turn signals just asking to get torn off by some rude tree! Is the "R" very nimble for tight trails and jumps? It looks a bit bulky in the pics. For a new bike, however it is not that expensive.

Other than lights is there much difference with the R & L?
EDIT ok, just looked at the web site, looks like a lot of difference!

Cheap, air cooled, counter balanced, full lighting, E start.....

Bet "Farmer Karl" would wax your ass on it, while you rode your A/F....

Ever ride one?

Great forks...

Farmer Karl could wax his ass from a KX65.

Get another 500 and put a lighting kit on it

Sorry, but I'm of the thinking that you cannot have enough 500's

Unless of course you're gonna drop some cheese on say a HD Road King or a Gold Wing. Nothing like having the baddest shit on the trail, and the shit that will take you anywhere else on the street you wanna roll, IN STYLE!(and comfort)

OK, well here is where I am at so far! Feel free to let me know if your opinions differ from what I have to date…

KLX300r: Sure it may be cheap, but I will be wanting more motor before long. Other than that it looks like a good deal.

CRF450: Needs a boat load of valve maintenance. Is this true if I trail ride more than track? Service Honda still has new 05’s!!!! Cheap cheap!!!!

CRF450x: Is this as bad as the non “x” or is it the same motor in a bike with lights? Local stealer quoted me $6100 plus tax for an 07.

WR450: Same question, is this the same as a YZF with lights, if so what about those darn valves!

KTM 300 XC-W (E): Electric start 2 stroke (YUM!), but the local KTM dealer is on crack. (Do not know if I could get one cheap enough, and still need to get lights on it!)

Husqvarna TE510: No dealer even close, high price, and still questions on competition 4 stroke valves. But this sucker is DOT ready, never a bad thing!

And finally...
XR650R: It felt a little big, and the suspension is a bit dated. I know this would be great for the woods, but worry about any track time it might see. I am 5’7” @160lbs, is this a bit large for me? The plus side is I think this is more of the bullet proof designs, like Honda’s of old. Even though it is liquid cooled, it does not have the valve problems of the “competition” 450’s. Stealer said I can have their 07 for $5100 plus tax.

Big concerns are price, durability (includes valve checking time), and will it be enough motor in a size appropriate frame. Now that you know a little more of my direction on these bikes, am I misunderstanding anything? Are the new 450 type bikes really that much o keep up? I really like the old bikes when I was a kid, ride it wash it and change the oil once every spring, that is all it needed.

(wow, that was a big long post!)

If you get the xr you will still need to uncork it , maybe pickup a used one allready uncorked for around 3500-4,000 maybe even one plated

those ktms are sweet too
