Okay, so I'm not the smartest guy in the world and especially with this 500 I've had the last couple months. When I bought it I took it apart to clean it up, put it back together and it's been fun ever since. I've been doing some work on it to get ready for a ride to the dunes this weekend and I noticed that the chain has been rubbing on the inside of the frame just above the swingarm pivot point. My rear shock is a pogo stick, it needs serviced so I know I'm getting a bit more suspension travel than with it charged and the chain looks like it's traveling the correct path. I have the suggested amount of play in the chain (a hair to the higher side) The only thing I can think of is maybe the front sproket I got is a bit more offset to the left? Sometimes when you go to the bike shop and they don't have the exact sprocket for the 500 maybe I got one from a XR model if it's interchangeable? Anyone ever experience this? nothing appears to be bent (frame, swingarm) but that's really hard to tell.

I've seen this on bikes using non-o-ring chains. The 500 will stretch and wear them so quickly thet they start to get side to side play.

I have an RK 0-ring chain on it now but it's probably not the higher tensile strength chain and yes I noticed it's stretch some. I have had real good luck with the RK x-ring chains and screwed up when I bought this one. It's probably the chain getting stretched.

the big xr has a differnt sprocket, have you checked the chain... if you can pull the chain up in the middle of the rear sprocket on the side furthest from the front sprocket high enough you can see daylight under it replace the gear set sprockets & chain, thats what I have been told. or you can remove the chain and lay it on the ground and if you can get a 90 deg turn in the lenght of chain replace it .

It's new chain and sprokets 2 rides ago. I cheaped out on the chain and now I'm paying the price for it probably. That's the only thing I can think of.

For a tight wallet the primary drive x-ring gold chain at rockymountain atv works great, I put one on my cousins '92 and he hasn't had a problem since. same tensile strength as the DID, even looked very similar, I wouldn't be surprised if they were manufactured together and exched and boxed sepparately. If I remember correctly, it was like $50

okay, I think I figured out my problem. I had my front sprocket on backwards. I didn't realize that the part the sticks out needs to be in the front and not up againist the case side of the motor. The chain was spaced out to far. Okay this is my first motorcycle in god knows how long. On all the 250r quads I have the part that sticks out goes in towards the cases for a spacer. I guess it's good to read the manual once in awhile.
