does the pc-9 hold up for a few years or just a season ? sent a piston off today, wondering what i can expect.

I called them for you.... They said it will hold up to a lifetime of doing burnouts, in empty fields....

I used Swain Tech and after 2 years it's still holding up. I think it cost $35.00 for the skirt and the heat coating on the top.

according to them 2x normal piston life. Of course once it shows wear if can be recoated and never need a new piston again

One without coolant on a 927 diet. Very little wear on piston, have to get a magnifying glass to see where it wore thru the horizontal lines on the vertex. Glad I caught it before things got way out of hand.

i figured it would last a long time unless there was a seizure. never hurts to get real world feedback though. thought the website said something about cooler temps, wonder if the piston expansion rate will change ? could barely get a .004 feeler gauge in there and i told them to apply it no thicker that .001. hopefully end up with .0025 clearance

i might check into that bore gauge. i looked several times before but dont recall seeing any for under $120 so i decided to hold off.

Is that a KTM 550 piston? If so, why are the skirts on the intake side slanted in at the bottom, is that standard?

its just standard 550 slug. mahle angled it on all corners because it drops into the case on the bottom stroke and reliefs cut into the case. not real sure why ktm wanted it like that, part of their master plan i guess

My brother had a 550 once. He overhauled it and they sent him a "standard" KTM 550 piston, which was not cut on the skirts, they were squared off like a regular piston would be. He ran it for a full season, and tore it apart to notice the skirts had been broken, bent, folded, and smashed into the same shape of the piston he was running previously. He didnt notice that the previous piston had been cut on the skirts, and just installed the new one straight outta the box. MISTAKE! If I remember right, those pistons were around $300 ( for JUST the piston).
We never really did understand what was up with that engine, and why the piston had to be cut like that. We just figured that maybe it had blown up once and someone put 500 cases on it or somethin?

i know the 495 piston is close in size to the 550 and has sqaure corners, maybe they sent him the wrong one by accident ? ive got 3 550 pistons and they all are cut the same, ive seen many more 550 pistons and theyre all manufactured the same. pretty sure if the edges arent cut the crankshaft wont travel through full stroke. makes you wonder why he didnt notice a loud banging sound

He musta been gettin jacked around the whole time while owning that bike, cause he put three pistons in it, and all three needed to be cut after he received them. It was kinda a pain in the ass markin everything out, and making sure everything was all squared up, and the angles were all right. Plus he didnt have anything to go off of besides the original piston he took out of it. It was a 1995 model.
