It has the wrong size piston and rings, no cylinder head and gasket.

I thought for sure its because the motor wanted to be a 2 stroke, with the rod punching ports into the cylinder.

I think the rings were installed backwards and it caused a nick in the crank which stressed the rod and the end result is a catastrophic failure.
