joined a while ago and just started to pull some $$ together.
im Matt and ive currently got a ktm 200 and before that i had a it490 and my dad has a ktm 525. I havent owned a cr500 before but i have ridden one and im pussywhipped on em.
later this year, about July a few mates of his, dad and me are going to the desert.
Dad is taking a ktm 950 adventure, when he gets it.
and i wanna be able to ride a 500af through the really sandy bits to prove to him and all his mates that two strokes really are better
lond story short i dont wanna spend more than $2500 and something that will handle well in the desert.
reckon itll happen?

if you are crafty, you might get away with that when its all said and done. but you might need a bit more up front, then make money back on the extra parts from both bikes.

Mate, I don't want to discourage you completely, but unless you've got the engine, electrics, carb etc already, and only if you have a hell of a lot of luck (we just don't get the amazingly cheap deals on donor bikes here like they get in the US) in getting a donor bike in great condition for bugger all, And you can do the conversion yourself, you don't have a hope in Hades in building an AF here in OZ for $2500.
But I wish you luck - you never know what can happen.

Thanks for taking my post in the spirit it was written in , Mat93.
I thought it could be read as my being a real arsehole. Which I certainly can be , at times.
Keep your eyes out, every now and then , you'll find a bargain.
I think engines are becoming a bit more available, with the blokes changing from singles to multis in the mini speedway cars - Asteriod up in Darwin may be the fellow who can point you in the right direction.

I know you guys are on the other side but there is hope. And I don't mean Hope and Change either.
Bob and Cepek have been pushing me to ride their Af's every time we go riding. I'll wait I tell them. We just want you to see what there like so you will build one.
Nope it's cool I'll wait. Still haven't climbed on to one of those things.
What I am doing is waiting for the right deals to come along and I will build this thing at no cost just time.
Most don't know this but I am a fabricator and have every tool you can think of just waiting to get turned on for this biuld.
So as my youngest son and I were on our way to Pismo Beach for a Lewis clan meeting A friend called me and was ditching his 1993 cr500.
It was in the back of his truck and waiting for someone to make an offer I asked him his bottom dollar.
$800.00 US. Or trade two seats and seat belts for his jeep that he just got. And I will drop it off at your house. This thing is a runner but it's clapped out.
We were going to restore it but it would take too much cash to do that to make it like I would want it to.
We waited for the right AF to come along endless hours of looking on all the sites ect. we even considered driving 16 hours one way to Nevada for two of them for $1200.00 but the drive just wasn't worth it.
Wait some more and BLAMMO!!! This guy sent his wife an E-mail for Christmas telling her he wanted a Divorce so she started selling shit.
It so happens that sitting in the garage was a 2006 crf250r in near perfect condition I wasn't there but my son was and he made a deal I'll take it for $1000.00 SOLD!!!!
I rode that thing the whole weekend at Hoonfest.
So after selling all the parts I should have an AF at $ 00.00
That would be free ninty free U.S.
So keep your hopes up and look for the deals they are there.
And don't believe them Santy Claus does exist.

Well I am from Washington state, I just got a 05 crf250 rolling chassis, but im not going to put the 500 in it, just to much bike for me. Some might even say i am not man enough, and that's fine too. I am going to put my 250 in it though, so I stay with the 2-stroke.
I hear all you aussies have troubles getting deals on stuff over there, so I thought i would throw it out for you. I would be more then happy to ship it out for you guys. My girlfriends Father lives over there, but not sure which town he lives in though. We have shipped plenty of things over there for him.
I have read through a lot of the posts here and have gotten so much information on how to do the frame mod. It has been more then helpful all the information you guys have put up here.

i may have a 08-09 CR-125 a shop has had this bike for over a year and the customer has vanished, motors rooted and in a box, the plastics are ruff, but a full set on ebay is bugger all i never went with it as there abit narrower then the 2003 CRF-450 i just bought.
If your gonna tag along with dad'n the boy's you'd better get a big fuck'n tank the 5-hundies are thirsty beast on the tap....but they'll scare the fuck out of ya...in a nice way.
