Anyone know anything about the 2005 6.0 Ford diesels? Any major problems with them?

Everyone I know with one said they'd never buy one again. The 7.3L is by far the best one of the pack I've ever had. I have a 2008 Dodge with the 6.7 and it has proven to be a hell of a power plant.

I have heard very good things about the duramax too. But I know when ford went to the whole dual turbo set up, it has been a nightmare. People said the same concerning the Cummins 6.7 too, but for minimal money they can be uncorked and straightend out too.

Ok cool. I am more of a Dodge guy and missed out on a really nice low mileage 3500. The thing was gone in under of week of being advertised.

the one ridiculous thing I've heard about the 6.0's is that, for ANY kind of real engine work, i.e. glow plugs, head gaskets, manifolds, etc., THE ENTIRE CAB HAS TO COME OFF THE TRUCK. For a guy that drives a truck for a living, that sounds completely insane. Other than that, don't know much about 'em. The chances that I'll ever buy a pickup truck less than ten years old are slim and none.

So far 119,000 miles,
Replaced one injector under warranty@ about 70k.
Serviced sticky injector under warranty @ about 95k.
Just replaced a failed EGR gasket, not under warranty, @ 117,000.
No other issues. Still runs strong.
Change oil @ 7500, fuel filter @ 15k, service tranny @ 30k.
100% stock including air filter.

I've heard all the stories too, but that's mine.

I've heard the same stuff. Before I bought my Dodge, everyone said it's no good and all that. But it has been good for us so far 30,000 and no problems.

My 7.3 hauls ass and has 215K on it. It has a 4 tune TW chip, a 6657 air filter mod and a 4" turbo back exhaust. I scorch Chevy and Dodge diesels regularly.

I like the 7.3 best of all. Never had a problem with any of them I've ever. This 6.7 has been proving itself to me though. First thing after warranty is up though, the DPF is coming off.

the '03 6.0 was a nightmare! they got better for the few years following, but you can't change certain issues, for exapmle, all of this emissions crap a variable geometry turbos are made for the diesel grade they have in europe, our diesel is dirty crap, for variable geometry turbos and particulate filters fail. The 6'0 has major valve guide wear issues because of the rocker angle and in '03 the valve train had an oil starvation issue. If I were to buy a diesel tomorrow, it was either be a pre '07 chevy or dodge, or a '00-'02 ford 7.3 w/ a manual trans. For me, the old 7.3 sits at the top of the list.

I had a 00 f350 with the 7.3 6 speed. It was lacking big time compared to my 96 and 97's I had. I think when they intercooled the 7.3 it was the beggining of the end. The 95 to 97 is the year range I would shoot for if I were to be buying a used truck. But with the manual tranny, the autos were for shit

Thanks for the advice all. I doubt I will do anything anytime soon unless a really good deal pops up but I have been looking.

'06 is pretty much the magic year for diesels. most of the 6.0 bugs were worked out, dodge had their freaken amazing B series 610 HO from mid'05 to mid '07 as the 5.9 HO and GM had the LBZ which is a tree stump pulling mofo. By late '07 they all had to jump on the new emissions band wagon. Now you have to fill up your cow piss tank or the truck will only go 5mph... I"M DEAD SERIOUS, A PISS TANK! (for 2011 of coarse)

Ported&Polished - try a DP Tuner! Its the shiznit for a 7.3. I have a 03 Excursion with a 7.3 - last year of them. It's been a great truck minus the 4R100 failure (typical from what I understand). But the 6.0 troubles arent so bad in 05...good friend has one and has had decent luck with it. As long as you keep it stock, you'll be ok IMO. And www.ford-trucks.com is a great resource to do some homework. This topic has been beaten to death over there.

Put a valve body on the 4r100 and its damn near bulletproof, Ive abused the shit outta mine and its still fine.

whoever told you that is a dumbass......they are a pain to work on, but not THAT big of a pain.

as for the 6.0....junk. the 6.4.....also junk.

the new diesel that is going into the new super-duty trucks is designed by ford in house, and looks to be promising.

you cant beat a 7.3 though.

That has not been my experience at all. I've owned a 94' badged as a turbo diesel but power stroke greets you when you open the hood. These are the bad boys. Smoke the tires 1st thru 2nd with wheel hop in third. I owned a 97' big time doggy it got the job done but nothing exciting, and I owned a 02' It didn't have hotrod balls like the 94' but it pulled harder longer than any of the others. Still have the 97, 02 and have moved up to a 06 dodge 5.9 and it is by far the best. I'm pulling a 30ft stock trailer grossing 30k+ over lizard head pass in Colorado every single week. The true test. The 5.9 will get 14mpg+ where the 7.3 would get 10+ and go slower and shift a lot more. All with a standard tranny. Stay far far away from the 6.0 bad mojo for sure. Did you know that only 20% of the first 2003 6.0 trucks made it home off of the lot? No shit!

Ok one more question. I found an 01' Excursion 4 X 4 with the 7.3 diesel. It has 58,000 miles on it and the guy is asking $22,300 for it. Is that a good deal and will the thing tow a decent trailer ok? I have no idea what the Excursion's tow rating is.
