alot of misconceptions about forged pistons. they dont necesarrily need more clearance, depends on the situation. ive posted the ktm service manual before, the oem forged mahle piston in the 500cc ktm called for a clearance of .0019-.0023 that is with aluminum bore and nikisil. alot of cast pistons arent even run that tight, cr250 for example uses cast piston and nikisil and the book calls for like .0025 if i remeber correct. a wiseco cr500 would lock up within 5seconds if you had it at .002

That MAHLE piston is far superior to the wiseco material, and are usually coated. Besides a few custom piston sets from the boys at racetech we exclusively use mahle. Strong, durable, and without contact from other parts we've never seen a piston dimension change, I've got one guy with 4 years of stock car racing on the same set in a 355 alky dirt car engine. If they were wiseco, je, or kb's I could tell u before the engine got tore down how much they'd have shrunk on the skirt

Mahle makes most of the pistons for F-1.....

cast vs forged debate has been beat up so much its like a bad dream everytime its mentioned (not sure why it was even brought up again  ). seems i remeber a 10 page discussion/pissing match floating around here somewhere.

Im in regular contact with the boys at Desrt Edge who are GODS when it comes to the CR500, heck they got the weapon to win 12yrs in a row!

Anyway this is the run down that Ive learnt from their experience.

Gearing: 15/36 - but this requires the rear hub to be machined down for chain clearance.

Gear Box: 5th gear installed from a pre 91 model so the leap from 4th to 5th isnt so great, the newer CR500's have a taller 5th which bogs the motor down at high speed in deep sand.

Clutch: Im not sure what they use but will bet its not standard.

Carby: They have tried them all & say that the pwk 39.5mm is best, but they get it bored out in a special way, imagine an upside down snow man, so at a lower slide position its still a 39.5, but at full rpm its around 41mm - this keeps her strong down low & helps fly up the top.

Jetting: 190 main! This is to keep her from toasting itself at full rpm for long stretches of desert, Im not sure exactly what the needle position is or what type, but it is raised, & Im not sure about the pilot but do know its not such a big deal as your rarely in low rpm's

Reeds: They custom build their own by using the stock reeds, cutting them & over lapping them with a fibre reed, similar to boysens but much stronger. They told me that V-Force reeds are lucky to make it one way without disintergrating!

Barrel: Ported & polished to what they call Finke specs (probably similar to the mo-better porting the US boys talk of), keeping just the right amount of bottom end while getting every bit of top end possible.

Head: Squish band modified to better suit unleaded, as they told me "the head was designed back when super was the go & never got changed to suit the charachteristics of unleaded"

Plug: At least the equivelant to a B9EGV, if it was in the 8's there would be a Chernobyl between your legs!

Piston: Honda genuine piston with a ceramic coated dome and teflon coated sides to help go the distance while withstanding the extra heat. They wont go near wiseco, refuse to even sell them.

Exhaust: They ALL run FMF gnarly's with Power Core 2 silencers, I was told they give the strongest pull & are the strongest in design (being 1/8th of an inch thick)
I have tried the standard, a pro circuit, and the FMF, & like what the FMF does "all round".

Engine: The crank is balanced which they say gives up to an extra 10 - 15 kph up top!

Flywheel weight: Some run them, some dont. Its an individuals preference.

Wheels: Something stronger than standard, as there is a lot of square edged holes & big rocks on high speed sections.

Suspension: Plush, its got to soak up the above mentioned & hold steady at 170kph + (110 mph) on the soft desert sand! Awesome.

Steering Dampener: Ive been told the "Scott" steering dampener is the best & by having one you will gain 15 minutes at least on a one way run, let alone the energy it saves you.

Fuel Tank: Clark 17L will mean only one fuel stop but can be more tiring, the standard means 2 fuel stops.

Fitness is just as important as pre-running the track they tell me.
Their a top bunch of blokes at Desert Edge and are very approachable, hide nothing and are 100% helpfull, talk to Michael Vroom & you cant go wrong.
Good luck & I wish I was there this year, being the 30th anniversary it will be BIG, hopefully next year! It would be good to have a CR500riders meeting at the Finke!

For ultra abuse (my nitrous bike) wiseco all the way, hammer the fuk out of it, cook it, ping it, overheat it and shes fine and still holding great compression.

My AF has an OEM cast and the compression sux after 2 years but its still running good :D

Im a wiseco fan

was that the bike that still got eaten by a 4 poke in the dunes?

No not eaten and it aint an apples to apples comparison when its setup to be running the juice. The timing is all the way backed off, the head is a stock low compression one, gearing is 15/44 and its turning a 14 blade viper on extensions. Off the juice it runs like a stocker with less traction on the bottle is a different matter

Put the timing back to normal, high compression head, a 10 blade, 14/49 gearing and drop the extensions and it would have raped danny.

You need to have a Photobucket account, or something similar. You just cut and paste the IMG link.

Easy for you to say, I don't understand any of that shit. :? :?

Before you can post a picture, you actually need a picture to be able to post it. :D

The last time I even touched the wifes camera, I was supposed to be holding it, guess what I droped it and broke the inside of the lens.

It cost almost $400 and 4 months to fix the damn thing    needless to say I am not allowed to touch it ever again.

The wife refers to me as "A HOPELESS CASE" :?

The wife aiso says that my AF will never go, at best it will be an expensive pile of scrap metal in her shed. :? :?

BTW the wife has canceled the pay TV and internet from 12-27-09 to the 1-18-2010? maybe longer, while she is on holidays in New zealand with our daughter :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes: :yikes:

I won't be able to post anything then.

That thing moves way to fast to read it, had to go through it at least a dozen times to get all

Cool. I have always wanted to know how to make a hangmans noose.

I am think of doing it in the garage, so when she gets home from NZ and opens the door I will be just hanging around.

Plus it will be easier to find a rafter.
