stator mount???

Post by Wheelie-Gene »

I was searching for lighting stators and found a 100w unit for '90-up 500s.
My engine is an 87, and they claim it won't work.
So, what's the difference in the mount pads between the early and 90-up????

I thought they were all the same.

I figured since the 125 stator fit the 500, why wouldn't a late 500 unit fit the old engine.
Talking to the guy in R&D, I questioned him on what the difference was....he didn't know. He thought I was crazy when I told him about the 125 electrics that I was running.
"Well....the computer shows different part #s between years."
I thought I was on the phone with the dumb asses at Auto Zone (computer shows this/that).

This is my 1st and only 500, so i don't have others to compare to.
So the 90-up stator and plate will fit what I have?

you have a 125 flywheel that fits the crank too?
my 125 stator stuff fits the case, but the flywheel isnt machined deep enough to work, and it has no rest to keep the clutch lifter in place.

Some of the 500 stator plates are different forsure, the heights that the coils mount at are different on 85-86 ones becasue of the different flywheel, the coils also mount further outboard so a 87+ flywheel wont even fit over the old stuff. my 87-88 plates are different than my '91s aswell, think they have 2 coils nd the 91 is single, '00 looks the same as '91 with an extra coil that ran the light kit that was on the bike

I had to relocate the timing tab and it did have the clutch shaft retainer.
Questioned the timing that I had and swapped the 500 unit back in. Couldn't really tell a performance difference between the two, since I used the 125 CDI on both.
Starting might be a little harder w/the 500 electrics.

I modded the 125 plate to accept a cheap XR50 lighting/ignition stator.
It's bolted into the engine, I just need to find the right diameter flywheel.

I don't feel like spending time to make it work, I was looking for a true bolt-in upgrade.

I searched a parts fische, and I can see differences between years. So I realize that there are differences.

I guess my main question is.....is the side case machined different between years, to accept the different stators?

That's what I was wanting to hear....and hear it from a known expert.
My day just got a lot better.

Thanks for that info.
