I have run into an issue. I picked up a parts 85' 500 and wanted to use the rear wheel from it on the 85' in the pics. The parts bike was missing one of the steel axle plates, the inside one on the drive side. It also has a crack in the swing arm. I take that to be a cause and effect situation. My issue is that when I put the wheel in the good 85' I have a gap at the spacers. the 3 number/letter code is different on the hubs. I realize this after new tube and tire install. The code doesnt match my 86' either. I thought 85' 500 hubs were the same? Could this be a 250 hub ? I ran into that issue on my 90' 250/ 500 parts swap. Could I just make a new spacer ? If anyone has any input I would appreciate it.

OK I have had a good look at things and the only possible thing wrong is you are missing something that should be in there.
It dosen't matter if you use a 125 / 250 / 500 hub from a 84 / 85 / 86 the part #s that have changed do not effect the total package of the rear hub setup.
Unless someone has put a narrow bearing/s in your wheel or the wheel spacers are to short, you are at lest one peice missing as far as I can tell.
Between the swingarm you need the 2 plates attached to the swingarm, then you need a collar / a washer / a bearing / a distance collar cap / a distance collar / another distance collar cap / another bearing .
The above is from the left side of the wheel to the right side.
The problem could be coming from your brake backing plate, you need a collar inside the hub passing through the brake backing plate, if its not that I'm stuffed if I know what it could be.
Maybe measure the peices inside the 2 hubs to see what is different and if they have the right amount of parts.

This and a slightly narrower spacer were the cause of my issues.

Cool! I didn't think it could be to much, there is stuff all in there to cause a big problem.
BTW what brand of rear sprocket is that?

It's a sun star works sprocket. It looks like the closest match to the old hrc works sprockets.

I would like to get an exact copy of the old HRC works sprocket, they look really COOL!

just a little update.
the 85' is coming along, i want to put in a new set of top end gaskets. it has a bit of seepage on the head gasket. at the same time i want to try and hot tank the rads to see if i can get them to clean up on the inside. other than some little odd and ends, im pleased with it.

So,
if all works out the 85 will soon have usd's on it. I'm gonna run 89' clamps with some 91' forks. I might strip it down and shoot the frame white and go with a white seat cover as well. There's a guy's link on vital mx who can do cover's in all colors with a ton of different logos. Maybe white with the 85' style logo in blue ? Any suggestions ?

If you ride like I do, in the places I do, that white is going to get nasty in a hurry!!

The 85 and 86 are now eligible for AHRMA racing.
I understand the 86 forks have cartridges?

Chances are looking good that the 85' will be for sale. I do plan on keeping parts, engine, wheels and poss the shock. It currently has usd's but i will include the original forks. If there is any interest let me know. Would like to part with it in on swoop.
