Looking into a purchase and anyone got any opinions, good or bad? Lots of companies making these, too many to choose from actually. Whatchu got?

u should PM MFDB, I know for a fact he has atleast 1 and a friend of his is armed for WW3, he has probably fired every one they make.

There are so many variants out there; some good and some not so good, but Colt, Bushmaster, Rock River, StagArms have always been good to me. The only ones I seen with real trouble were ones built from part kits, basically mismatched parts, so stick with getting a complete factory rifle. Oh yeah your bolt and bolt carrier are your friend, keep em clean!

I've heard the same thing about kits. I guess each part is machined to a different spec, so it fits together poorly and ends up being either sloppy like a russian riffle or too tight to return the bolt properly everytime, then you have lots of jams.
a firend of mine in cali built a fab10 ar-15 which was a non removably magazine lower that loaded with clips from the top after removing the carrier pin. it was a peice of junk.

You can buy an M-16 or an AK-47 here, they are illegal but if you know the right people you are able to obtain one, I was last quoted $1500 for one.

I had the bushmaster xm15e2s. Kick ass rifle never had any problems with it and peeled off 1000's of rounds.

i've put a couple thousand through my olympic arms. i haven't had a single problem yet whatsoever.

you're paying for the name when you buy a Colt btw.

The only thing i've noticed lately with the a/r's is that the ones under a grand dont seem to work to good or for to long. Any of them worth a shit are around 1,200 bucks and up(new gun prices, with some better features than just a carry handle).

AR15's are fun and pretty good shooters at decent ranges with the right set up. Shortened and dialed in they are good for CQC but....

I like to think of them like a CR250 compared to a CR500...the AR/ M-16 variants might be lighter and easier to handle for most people but they just don't not have the hard hitting long range and severe impact capabilities like a lapua load in a 7.62.

The .30-06 won two world wars and it's necked down little brother has superior ballistic advantages over the NATO 5.56mm (.223 remington).

If I were you and had the money I'd look at what Springfield has to offer in one of these:

Definitely agree about going with the battle rifle. The one you have pictured is chambered in 7.62 NATO though. I don't think they make 30-06 m1s anymore. The 7.62x51 nato (308) is the round to go with. if you want an ar platform, rock river arms makes a nice one in 308 (lar-8 ) There are several 308 guns that use the FAL mag and are all great:

Kel-tec RFB
FAL
L1A1
LAR-8

CETME
PTR-91
Saiga 308

I'm all for making things as universal as possible and the m1 and saiga 308 can use the fal mag with a little bit of work.

Is your AK-47 legal to own where you are and is it fully automatic?

I have the synthetic version of the above - hands down, my favorite rifle to shoot. Besides, have you tried acquiring .223 ammo recently??

I love that thing, its so comfy you can shoot it all day long.

Bought this today. Double Star is the manufacturer. Construction worker out of money and I offered $500.00. This will be an off the grid weapon. Thinking about building something from pieces too.

In the US you can own machine guns (transferable) legally with just a $200 tax stamp.

Springfield makes an M1A (M14) (.308) they are nice but very expensive compared to an AR and MUCH heavier. They still offer M1's in 30-06.

Watch out for Chinese parts, my sear malfunctioned causing my AR to run full auto from time to time, 10 years and $100,000 fine if you are caught.

I prefer capacity over caliber in a CQB/short range rifle. AR-15 is much more maneuverable and much lighter also has 30 rounds. M1A/M14 is much better for medium/long range precision but lacks capacity (20 rounds average) and is much less "agile"...

The state has to allow Class 3 firearms first, not all do; then you can apply to the ATF and get a stamp for a pre 1986 full suto or 3 shot burst weapon (nothing newer) SBR 'Short barreled rifles" come in to play is your talking sub size as well. You can pay as much as 12K for a transferable 20+ year old M16 and $30+ for a squad weapon!

I for one would rather pitch out $1k and get a new quality AR15 clone and pic my shots!

California has a 10 round cap on magazines. . Last time i checked around the magazine had to be fixed or require a tool of somesorts to remove.

a cali friend of mine had a fab10 lower which was a fixed 10 round mag.

If you have your class 3, you could walk into a gun shop in Idaho and buy 3 shot burst conversions. I was going to put one on my Bushmaster but decided it wasn't worth it.

AK's are legal in the states, it just can't be full auto. My brother has owned a few and I'm thinking about getting one for my son and me. They're definitely dirt cheap here.
