hello,
i need some help with a project i have going. i have a 99' cr 125 that with the help of some friends is mostly complete now. i have come to realize that i have too much stuff  ! im asking to see if anyone has used the gen 1 125 to da an a/f conversion ? i know its more work than the 250. since i dont have the 99's engine, i do have an 04' engine and i think my bro has an 01' engine. do i make a 125 or use it as a home for my extra 90' 500 engine or my extra extra 90' 500 engine ? i wouldnt mind a 125 or a 500 so i guess its just which one do i want more ? i dont know, any info would be appreciated.

Someone on here has done a Gen-1 CR125 as an 500AF, like you said it is more work.

You could do either a 125 or a 500, but which do you prefer.

Ask yourself this question, how many CR500's is to many CR500's.

If the answer is more than what you have now, just build another CR500AF.

Looks like I'm in luck! I can swap my gen 1 125 frame and get a gen 1 250 frame. Do you think I can get more clearance with the 125 tank or is there no differance at all ? Will the kyb's perform well or should I opt for the showa 250 suspension ? Lastly, is there a diieranc between the radiators on the 125 and the 250, as far as capacity ? Thanks

Since I have nearly all the parts to do a gen 1, Im going to start up that project. I have a few questions though. I have the option of running a 90' engine or an 85' engine possibly. I am not sure what the bikes use will be, dunes, moto or trails ? I understand that there is differences in the transmission, compression and possibly the potential of both engines ? What about a mix and match of parts ? In your opinions, what would be the better way to go ? Thanks

Depending on what you use it for go with the 90 engine or you could put the 90 jug on the 85 bottom end with the 90 water pump ( helps water hose clear exhaust pipe )

If you can live with 4th and 5th gear in the 90 just use it and if you have to split the engine at some stage just swap in the higher 4th and 5th.

Would the 125 tank help me out a little as far as clearance goes ?

the 90 jug isnt going to fit in the cases, it can only go in 89-01's wihtout machine work

Thats what I had thought. Theres a a few pictures of someone doing that on here. Is the main benefit of doing that, just to make the coolant routing easy ? Is there a notable performance increase ?

I've got a couple of '87 jugs here that i'm going to poke an endmill into + weld a elbow from an xrp fitting on so they'll work with the newer wp angle

shortdeck 85-86 cases are tougher to do, i wouldnt bother. I found a jug on ebay that honda made as a "service" part that has 89-01 design, with short reed, tall rear studs, and a blank for the outlet, but 85-88 sleeve diamiter + rear water outlet. It found a home in my '03 frame

I think my problem is, that I have more crap than I know what to do with ! I should just keep it simple and run the 90' since it's not in a bike yet. Bigger clutch pack, non coroded water pump. I'm really only building the gen 1 because its easy and cheap. My gen 2 looks like it'll be a new years project. With an 85', 86' and a 90' steely already its not like I'm in dire need of getting a 500 up and going, I just want to !

i'd put the 85 engine in whatever you dont plan on riding, or ebay, unless you have the mainshaft or complete trans to update the clutch to 86-01 parts.

Thats the thing, I do have the parts. My buddy races carts, thats where my whole 500 bug started. My 90' motor came with a bunch of trans and clutch goods. Ill run the 90' in the gen 1 and the 85' once updated i the gen 2. Unless anyone has a better plan of attack ?
