are GEARBOX ADDITIVES ok to use?

over here in aus, we have many additives for gear boxes that claim to give them longer life. "slick 50" is one of the brands. are they safe to use in motorbike gboxes with wet clutches??? ive heard many different oppinions, some say it works so well that the clutch slips and burns out.others say its fine i remember honda provided something similar in the 80s to honda owners who had vfr 750s/100s. apparently they suffered from soft cams that were wearing out prematurily and this was a easy fix as opposed to replacing the cams. apparently it worked. so i was thinking of running some through the box. its ment to last for somethin like 50 oil changes. any suggestions? im thinking of grabbing some for this weekends ride.

If it wasn't for the clutch I would say go for it.

The clutch could be a problem though, bearings and gears no problem.

Run regular oil. If you run an additive, be prepared for the clutch to not work.

X 1,000,000,000!!!

You do NOT want friction modifiers in your gearbox oil! Your clutch will thank you for it. Well, unless you like a clutch that slips like mad...

What's wrong with regular tranny fluid? I think the stuff made for wet clutches works pretty good :?

If you have to add an additive, is the oil really worth shit? You hearing me Mr. Lucas?

Its pittiful looking at the latest charts and seeing Bailey and Jones endorsing Lucas.

Don't know if Amsoil ships to OZ, probably could make it happen, but there site is worth the read.

Friction mods are a no no. 10W-40, 15W-40 keeps the tranny happy.

Type "F" locks up the clutch better....

yup, dextron WILL make the clutch slip. I messed up and ran it once.
If you put dextron in an old ford tranny the thing will howl and slip like crazy because the bands can't grab, I see a cr500 clutch being no different.

I couldn't agree more! Lots of the more expensive "automotive" motor oils have additives that while good for a car motor will destroy a motorcycle clutch. From what you describe I'm guessing you've already used some oil you shouldn't have and your friction plates are impregnated with bad stuff that you now can't get rid of. As Bob suggested, I would get some new friction plates and steel plates and start over. I've been using the cheap super tech brand of oil from wal mart for years with zero tranny or clutch problems.
Now if you start talking pre mix oil or oil in a 4 stroke, that is a completely different debate and a "good" oil is a must!

Kinda makes you wonder why old school drag guys would run 30w motor oil in their c6 autos to make them shift harder. heard of some monster trucks doing it too. one more for the shit oil.
