neutral??

well, ive been gone for 3 weeks riding and drinking beer. got some hours on the 500, and burned some gas (and does it ever like gas!) still hotstarting weird but if i hold the throttle cracked it will light. anyways, as soon as it gets warm, having a tough time finding neutral, like impossible most of the time, which goes nice with the hotstart problem when you are waiting for buddies. its not too tough to find when its not running but seems worse than it should be for a honda? tranny feels pretty notchy. the clutch isnt dragging overly, running 75w smoker tranny oil in it. any ideas?? any help is appreciated, JR

there could be a few things but my first guess would be notched basket. take the cover off and look

the basket looked good when i had it off to index the kicker but maybe i should check again. it doesnt feel like the clutch is dragging bad though which is what confuses me.

Put it in 1st gear with the engine off, pull in the clutch.... and try to push it.

Does it push, or does the tire skid?

OK went out and pushed my bike, I can feel some drag, but doesnt skid. this is on the smooth finished cement garage floor.

I had the same problem w/ my '86 turns out the spring on the little arm w/ wheel that clicks the drum into place (right behind the clutch basket) was worn. I took it off, stretched it out, put it back on and now it has really good solid clicks and finds neutral easily. also a notched backet or improperly adjusted clutch cable will cause that. Also that 75w molasis sucks in these trannys, get some 10w40 non energy conserving oil and it will shift better and the clutch wil run cooler. I use 15w40 rotella because I also run it in my car and buy it in a 3gal box from sams club.

So any diesel oil should be cool in this thing then?? Thanks for the input, ill have a peek at that spring, JR

yup, the only oil you shouldn't use would be anything labeled a energy conserving since it will cause the clutch to slip. some even run type F ATF to help a trans with sticking issues since it is so thin. but dextron with cause the clutch to slip.

yeah, but I buy 3 1 gallon jugs in a box from the wally affiliate "sams" for $30, that comes out to like a $4 savings
but them again, if I feel like I need a boost of confidence a trip to wally world is better than any therapy session.

I stay the hell away from Wally on Friday's. It a muffin top, camaflouge wearing extravaganza. Some things can't be unseen.

I put Bel-Ray gear saver in my 91 cr5 tranny and I loosened up my clutch cable a little bit because it had NO freeplay in it before.
Now it has about 1/8 of an inch of freeplay and I'm feeling a little clutch drag and having a harder time finding neutral while its running. Should I switch to Rotella or should I tighten my clutch back up to zero play?
If I run Rotella (which I wouldn't mind doing because its alot cheaper than the gear saver) would I need to change my oil more often?
Thanks

the only thing I'll put belray gearsaver in is my grandson's 50cc automatic. stuff is thin as water, same with atf. 40 wt motor oil.

ok got gaskets, took it apart, then took off for the weekend riding in the mountains again. i had a blown base gasket too so i was waiting for that since i need to get the pipe and coolant lines off for both. anyways, basket wasnt bad at all, marks for sure but not bad. but that little roller lever in behind was pretty sloppy, stretched the spring a bit and its definitely better now, but still tough to find neutral sometimes. might take it apart and tighten it up some more. thanks for the help guys, its far better but I think im going to put a new basket in it to be sure that isnt contributing as well.

Just smooth the basket you have now while its out. That will tell you if the notches are causing issues...
