my brother has an 86' cr125 and also just picked up an 87' cr500. does anyone out there know if the 87 swing arm will fit the 86 frame. as far as the master cyl mount goes, that shouldnt be a big issue. im just having a hard time finding cross ref material for that far back. thanks

I beleive the 87 swingarm will fit 85/86 and 88, not 84, 89 or later and 88 CR250.
The 84 CR125-500 frames are narrower and the later swingarms are to wide to fit.
85-88 CR125-500, except 88 CR250 all use the same swingarm pivot bolt the frames share the same width and should bolt in just fine.
The 86 shock should work just fine in bolting up, but the valving may not suit it though.
I have seen an 88 CR500 with an 85/86 rear shock, same shock just that one has a remote res and the other is piggy back res.
If you have both bikes, just swap the swingarms and you will soon find out won't you.

Ok, here's my plan of attack. I'm going to use my extra 85' swing arm, 87' caliper plate and caliper with my extra 87' wheel. I found a picture of RJ's 86' cr 250 and will try and duplicate the master cylinder mount. I am going to have to take a few inches off of the sub frame spar but that shouldn't be a big deal. I may have to modify the way the pedal mounts to the frame though ? I could do it the easy way and run the 87' swing arm but it won't look the same. I can't make it exactly the same but the closer the better.

I think the 88-01 brake caliper plate would be the better one to use, but it may not suit the look you are after.
The 87 brake caliper plate was only used for the one year by Honda because it wasn't the best design for the job.
Other than that I don't see why it can't be done, happy building.
Before you do anything take a look at the later design and see what you think.
