Happy Independence Day from MDOT

Why wouldn't they just make 2 bridges intead? then tearing down an old one and making 1 large one?
We have a river running through the city here. and to make 4 lane bridge going north they just built another 2 lane bridge right beside the old one.
And going south of town, they are currently building a second bridge beside the old one to make it 4 lanes.
